NAU Web Policy

Important differences between the Web and traditional media are:

  • Web pages are easily updateable.
  • Web documents have no final form, but rather represent a point in time during a process of continuous development lifecycle.
  • Web pages are interactive. They allow direct access to information and enable the user to interact with that information.

Keep current with "Recommended NAU web page guidelines." These guidelines cover recommendations on developing official Web pages including discussions on bandwidth, text alternatives, image use, and design suggestions.

Policy 1:
Abide by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, copyright laws, the NAU acceptable use policy, the NAU Graphic Identity System, all NAU Human Resources policies, and all local, state, and federal laws.

Policy 2:
Official college and departmental web content and namespace require the approval of the deans, chairpersons, or other university administrators responsible for the content of the programs they represent. Implementation should be coordinated by ITS.

Policy 3:
Ensure that official web pages abide by Section 508 accessibility guidelines.

Policy 4:
The following elements are required on official publicly-facing university web pages that are used to conduct university business.

  • The NAU logo from official on-line sources
  • The name of the college, school, or department
  • Contact information; including a telephone number and electronic means of communication
  • Link to return to the NAU home page;

The general NAU population is considered part of the public audience for this policy. It does not pertain to web pages that contain only personal information.

Policy 5:
All network communications between servers and clients/users that include sensitive personal or institutional data will be conducted via secure and encrypted connections. Additionally, departments wishing to accept credit card transactions via the their websites must adhere to "CMP 301 04: Authorization and Procedure for Departmental Credit C   ard Acceptance" (see: http://www4.nau.edu/comptr/policies_procedures/com301-04.html).

Policy 6:
Any official NAU online content must reside on a Northern  Arizona University server unless given prior approval by the university’s Strategic Web Committee. In addition, any redirects under the nau.edu namespace must point to an official NAU server unless given prior approval by the university’s Strategic Web Committee.

Policy 7:
For consistency in style and navigation, all webpages must be created using the NAU webpage template. If using the Content Management System, you will automatically be using the template. You can also obtain the template by contacting University Marketing.
