SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM NEWS:

SOCIOLOGY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM NEWS
by
Yvonne Luna, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Internship Coordinator for the undergraduate programs in Sociology

Dave McKell ran a very successful internship program for many years.  I took over as Internship Coordinator for the undergraduate programs in Sociology in the fall of 2006.  Our students are getting high quality on-the-job experience while earning credit toward their Sociology degrees.  This academic year, students interned with the following agencies: Coconino County Juvenile Detention, Victim Witness Services of Coconino County,  Cross-Cultural Solutions (Costa Rica), Planned Parenthood, Coconino County Community Services, Catholic Charities, Ponderosa High School, and Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County.

In addition to the agencies listed above, previous internships placements since my tenure include: Goodwill Industries, the Democratic Headquarters, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (Washington DC), Coconino County Adult Probation, Pima County Faith Based Programs (Tucson), Northern Arizona University Office of Student Financial Aid and Student Employment, Orphanage Outreach (Dominican Republic), Northland Family Help Center, ABRiO, Native Americans for Collective Action (NACA), Four Corners Association (Winslow), and the Arizona Public Interest Research Group.

In final evaluations by field supervisors, a majority of interns were rated as excellent. Field supervisors also stated that students were assets to their programs and clients. The internship program not only benefits students, but supports and assists our community as well.

If your agency is interested in Sociology interns, please contact me at 928-523-6135 or yvonne.luna@nau.edu.
