SOCIOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (SOC 408)

INTERNSHIP COORDINATOR:  Dr. Yvonne Luna
E-MAIL:  Yvonne.Luna@nau.edu
PHONE:  928.523.6135

OVERVIEW

The sociology internship program provides sociology students an opportunity to apply their classroom education to a work experience.

The internship coordinator assists the student in finding an internship placement.  Typically, the student will apply to an agency, and if accepted, he/she will work similar to a regular employee for the semester.  Upon successful completion of the internship, the student will receive course credit for the hours worked.  Students can earn anywhere from three to twelve sociology credits.

The Benefits of an Internship

An internship is a great way for sociology students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a job experience.  Internships allow students an opportunity to apply sociological concepts and theories while gaining valuable work experience.  In addition, an internship with an agency may lead to regular, paid employment after course completion.  Finally, an internship looks great on a resume when applying for jobs or graduate school.

Examples of Past Internships

Student in the past have interned with Adult Probation, Catholic Social Services, Ministry, Northland Family Help Center, Victim/Witness, and other area agencies (see Agency List for agencies in the Flagstaff area that students have interned with in the past).  Students most often work with a local Flagstaff agency.  However, other students have worked throughout Arizona and other states.  The coordinator will consider suggestions from students for internship placements.

General Rules and ELIGIBILITY Requirements

  • Internship credit will not be given for work done in a semester prior to the semester for which the student is registered in SOC 408.
  • Students are not permitted to intern at an agency of current employment without prior approval of the internship coordinator (Dr. Luna) and the intern's work supervisor.
  • The student must be of junior level standing.
  • The student must be a sociology major or minor.
  • The student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.

PROCEDURES FOR PROSPECTIVE INTERNS

1)  The student will need to complete an APPLICATION FOR SOCIOLOGY INTERNSHIP.  The application should be submitted to the internship coordinator with the following deadlines in mind.  Applications should be turned in at the Sociology & Social Work department office (SBS #330).

 INTERNSHIP SEMESTER  DEADLINE
 FALL  JULY 1
 SPRING  NOVEMBER 15
 SUMMER  APRIL 1

2)  The internship coordinator will contact the student within three weeks after the application deadline.

3)  Once an agency is selected, the student must complete the requirements for hire set forth by that agency.

4)  Once an agency has accepted the student as an intern, the student must complete and submit a SOCIOLOGY INTERNSHIP CONTRACT to the internship coordinator (the form can be picked up at the sociology department office, SBS #330, or downloaded from this website). The student will then receive a permission number to register for the course, SOC 408.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN INTERN

Prior to or at the beginning of the semester for which the internship is taking place, the internship coordinator will provide the student with a syllabus detailing his/her responsibilities that include:

  • A daily log must be kept and should include the date, a summary of each day’s events, the tasks performed, and the total number of hours worked that day (click here to view SAMPLE LOG).  The intern's work supervisor should sign the log at the end of each week.
  • A paper written by the student must be turned in at the end of the internship and must include:
    • The mission of the agency
    • Your role within the agency
    • The sociological concepts and/or theories that were relevant to your experience
  • Periodic meetings with the internship coordinator.
