The mission of Catholic Social Services is to build just and caring communities by strengthening families, reducing poverty, alleviating suffering, and advocating for justice to enhance human dignity and ensure the social and economic participation of all.  Students interested in interning with Catholic Charities must specify interest in:

  • Family Emergency Shelter and Transitional Program - the only "family" shelter services in Flagstaff.  Students will assist with case management, client education, and family support services.
  • PATH Program - a homeless outreach program.

    • Position Title(s): Youth Development Coordinator
    • Responsibilities and Duties: Working on community based teen pregnancy prevention projects and awareness activities. Specifically, promotion of teen pregnancy prevention month, assisting with preparation of Teen Maze event and Girls and Sports Day, will also serve as an individual and group mentor to members of the Teens Taking Action Group, an after school program focusing on service projects involving teen pregnancy prevention which meets monthly.
    • Qualifications and Desired Skills: Candidate will possess good written, oral, and organizational skills. The intern will be a self starter who understands the importance of deadlines. He/She must have some flexibility in availability of hours. He/She must be outgoing, creative and must posses a strong desire to work with youth, primarily high school age.

·         Developing and leading a new Youth Council made up of local middle and high school students.  The Youth Council will assist in guiding the priorities of the CCC&Y.  This will involve public speaking, recruitment, and organizing and facilitating meetings.  The development of a Youth Council is critical to the mission of the CCC&Y, to ensure that young people self-identify the greatest needs of this community.

·         Working with the Youth Assets Committee to assist in the implementation of our exciting Promoting Assets with Sculpture (PAWS) project.  This project is based on the 40 Developmental Assets that were identified by the Search Institute (www.search-institute.org) as necessary supports, opportunities, values, and skills that young people need to achieve success.  The PAWS committee is working with local artists, youth, businesses, and non-profit organizations to design and install 40 mountain lion sculptures throughout Flagstaff – with each lion depicting one of the essential Developmental Assets.  This project will involve fund-raising; organizing collaborations between artists, youth, and organizations; and publicity.

·         Planning, organizing, and implementing workshops and other community education opportunities related to major issues that affect children and youth in our community.  These workshops will vary in purpose, target audience, and structure.  They may address issues including sexual violence, poverty, racism, predators on the internet, or child abuse; be for parents, youth, or professionals; and be over a lunchtime, a half-day, or multi-day – depending on the needs of the community.  This project will involve maintaining communication with workshop presenters and hosts, identifying key issues that affect youth in our community, and conducting evaluations.

In addition to these primary projects, the intern will have the opportunity to attend multi-disciplinary meetings related to children’s and youth issues; learn skills including professional writing and public speaking; and advocate for children and youth at the local, regional, and state level. All work will be done in coordination with and under the direction of the CCC&Y’s Executive Director.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Coconino County Adult Probation is a sentence that is an alternative to prison.  The goal is rehabilitation of offenders and restoration to community and victim(s).  The areas the intern may work in include, but are not limited to, pre-sentence, specialized caseloads (sex offenders, domestic violence offenders, mental health, etc.), standard probation supervision, intension probation supervision, drug court, and community service.  For students interested in the probation field, this internship is an excellent way to get one’s foot in the door.  It is also a good way to get an inside look at the criminal justice system and other arenas throughout Coconino County that work together in rehabilitation and restoration.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Intern opportunities exist with the Coconino County Community Services Department’s Basic Business Empowerment Program, specifically pertaining to Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). IDAs are dedicated savings accounts, targeted specifically to working families. IDAs provide an incentive to work, save and build assets as a means to reach self sufficiency.

Basic Business Empowerment is looking for NAU student interns and other volunteers to assist with: recruitment and retention of participants, grant writing, presentations, marketing, development of promotional materials, data collection and analysis, development of financial education classes and community outreach.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing a system for continuous marketing and recruitment of IDA account holders
  • Timely preparation of semi-annual progress report
  • Direct assistance to IDA participants including determining eligibility, monitoring deposits, referrals to community resources, creation of action plans and other individual assistance as needed
  • Keeping informed of national IDA issues
  • Maintaining current participant records and providing accurate information to database manager
  • Development of relevant financial education based on identified needs of participants
  • Assisting with applications for funding opportunities

Qualifications include the ability to: work and communicate effectively with others; maintain records and participant files; and, speak to individuals and groups as necessary to promote agency’s asset building opportunities. Computer skills are desirable.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The intern will be assigned to work with the case managers in the Public Fiduciary office.  The Public Fiduciary office works with clients who are assigned to them by the court.  The individuals are incapacitated and/or physically challenged.  The office may be either a guardian or conservator for the individual.  A guardian is a person appointed by the probate court to ensure that the personal and medical needs of an incapacitated person are met.  A conservator is a person appointed by the probate court to manage the financial affairs of someone who is determined to be unable to manage their own finances or property.  The intern will learn Experience and Tasks, will attend meetings with other agencies to discuss and establish a plan of action/goals for individuals who are DDD (physically challenged) and discuss the individual’s budget, establish a budget for all other participants and assures that there is no overspending, assists with annual guardian/conservator report to the court, assist with inventory for new clients and update inventory as needed for current clients, do research of client property, possibly work with vital statistics to obtain birth or death certificates, research available facilities for placement, become familiar with the process for becoming guardian and conservator and the court process in reviewing annual accountings/case management conferences, and last interns may assist with the sale and/or disposal of property.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The intern would work closely under the supervision of the Case Manager and be assigned to work with individuals 60 years of age and over.  They will also work with physically challenged individuals.  Assignments would include meeting with a client and family members after a referral has been made, complete case management assessments to assess the needs of individuals and turn in documents in a timely manner, develop a service plan for their needs, attend social service agency meetings in order to learn about formal and informal resources available to the client, and attend any staff in-house meetings or training.  Requirements for this internship students must like to work with older adults, be sensitive to the needs of the elderly, be able to communicate not only with the case managers but also with all members of the senior services department and community based organizations, and must have their own means of transportation.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
An intern's typical duties include, working as a team member carrying out the following:

  • processing juveniles into the detention facility;
  • communicating with parents, social agencies, and service providers regarding juveniles;
  • observing and accurately recording behavior, attitude and responses for the courts and other involved professionals appearing in court;
  • counseling, youths as needed;

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
COPE collaborates with organizational, neighborhood, government, and stakeholder groups to create sustainable solutions to community problems. For example, COPE works with the Meth Free Alliance to help stop the use of methamphetamine. COPE hosts the annual Arizona Women's Conference, an event that inspires and educates the community on issues important to the wellness of women. COPE's Health Promotion programs offer HIV/AIDS testing, street educational outreach to high risk populations, and a drop-in center providing referrals and educational and support activities. COPE develops affordable housing, job readiness, and employment training solutions for disadvantaged populations.

  • Engage in social conversations with clients based on clients’ interests.

  • Assist clients with activities of daily living such as cleaning, hygiene, cooking, and other activities related to the client’s treatment plan.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The Department of Economic Security, Division of Developmental Disabilities, in partnership with individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, advocates, community members and service providers, develops, enhances and supports environments which enable individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve and maintain physical well-being, personal and professional satisfaction, participation as family and community members and safety from abuse and exploitation.  As an intern students will assists a support coordinator in their duties to learn all aspects of that position.  Students will assist in contacting families and all agencies involved with each individual to schedule service plan development and review meetings, they will attend these meetings, learn required paperwork and filing, become familiar with other agencies DDD works with, and research and develop new resources.  Developing new resources can be an internship in itself.  Interns may also assist with task related to eligibility determination.  An internship with this agency could lead to employment within DDD in the future.

Overview:

Flagstaff International Relief Effort (FIRE) is a non-profit, non-religious, non-political grassroots organization based in Flagstaff, AZ. Our efforts are currently focused on Mongolia, although we plan to expand our reach.  Since 1999 F.I.R.E. has completed six distribution trips, shipped nine 40-foot containers of clothing, provided a dozen schools with a total of 80 computers and 6,000 English books, and delivered $610,000 worth of medical supplies to almost 50 clinics and hospitals. FIRE seeks a motivated intern for summer 2009 who shares FIRE’s values and has a professional interest in such fields as the non-profit sector, public service, management, marketing, international development, academia, communications, and the like.

Possible Duties:

  • Help develop community outreach projects and promote FIRE’s cause
  • Website design and maintenance; update literature
  • Research, review, and contribute to proposals and grant applications

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

          Flagstaff Shelter Services (FSS) is a nonprofit grassroots agency serving homeless men and women in Flagstaff. Our mission is to ease the suffering of homeless men and women by providing shelter and services in a safe, supportive and caring environment and to assist them in overcoming the obstacles to obtaining permanent housing. Flagstaff Shelter Services operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering day services and overnight shelter. We are always welcoming community minded volunteers and are currently looking for interns.

          Interns are primarily responsible for homeless community member engagement and HIPP (Homeless Improvement and Prevention Planning) intakes and follow up. There is a strong focus on documenting member contacts, referrals, and progress.  This position requires a person who can cope and react effectively to crisis situations; including medical and psychiatric emergencies. Interns must become familiar with the social services in the immediate area and be comfortable in referring our clients to the appropriate services. Interns will provide informal and formal written encouragement to guests when appropriate. Interns will use HMIS and an Access database to maintain accurate records and data for both our overnight shelter and our day center programs. The data collected will be used for grant reporting, community education, and program evaluation. Interns will develop on the job case management approaches, along with learning about various chemical dependency and mental illness treatment models.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          Upward Bound Math & Science, within the Northern Arizona University Educational Support Programs Department, is a federally funded program that brings high school students from the southwest to Northern Arizona University for an intensive summer residential program.  The program provides an integrated and challengeing college-prep program for low-income and first generation high school students in the summer on the Northern Arizona University campus.

          The intern will assist in all planning for the summer including staff hiring, training, coordination of the larger student activities, and documentation of services.  The intern will gain skills on all levels of program coordination with an emphasis on human relations.  This internship can be taken for course credit during the spring semester and has the potential to lead directly into a summer position on our Senior Staff including room, board, and a $1600-$1700 stipend.

          The mission of Girls on the Run of Coconino County is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. We fulfill our mission by offering curriculum-based, experiential, 12-week afterschool programs that use the power of running to give adolescent girls the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their gifts and activate their personal power. Women volunteers from the community are trained to facilitate Girls on the Run® programs, serving as coaches and positive adult role models. Our goal is to empower girls to reach their full emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical potential. Our objective is to reduce pregnancies, eating disorders, depression, suicide attempts, substance abuse, unhealthy relationships, and confrontations with the juvenile justice system among the girls who participate in our programs.

          Internship opportunities with Girls on the Run are available during the fall and spring semesters for women who want to gain hands-on experience facilitating a 12-week prevention program for adolescent girls in Flagstaff, and develop their program coordination and community outreach skills. Special projects may also be developed based upon the Intern's professional interests and goals.

          Goodwill Industries Northern Arizona is a member in good standing with Goodwill Industries International and one of over 182 separate and autonomous Goodwill’s that comprise the largest not-for-profit provider of rehabilitation and re-cycling services in the world.  Goodwill is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

          Goodwill Industries Northern Arizona has been a leading provider of rehabilitation, employment, training, educational, and emergency assistance to individuals with barriers to employment and community living throughout Northern Arizona since 1963.  With “GoodNeighbor Centers” located in Flagstaff, Sedona, Cottonwood and Winslow we provide services throughout Northern Arizona designed to help those we serve become independent, tax-paying citizens.  Goodwill’s mission is simple!  “We turn donations into good jobs, good homes, and good neighborhoods!”  We do this through the following array of services:

          JobsPlus provides “hands on” long-term supported employment to individuals with severe disabilities seek, secure, and maintain employment at Goodwill and at other businesses throughout Northern Arizona.  We assist individuals with disabilities to prepare for, secure, and maintain jobs for which they are interested in and are qualified for.  Through regular job support with the individual, family members, and employer we assist these individuals in becoming and remaining productive, tax-paying citizens!  Funded by the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) Division of Developmental Disabilities and Rehabilitation Services Administration.

          Goodwill Works is an employee development training program that assists individuals with disabilities wishing to work for the first time or return to work after being away from the job market develop the knowledge, skills, and work behaviors necessary to seek, secure and maintain employment.  Funded by the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) Division of Developmental Disabilities and Rehabilitation Services Administration.

          One Stop Career Resource Center provides, under one roof, Adult Basic Education including General Equivalent Education (GED) preparation, financial assistance in paying for the GED examination, assistance in applying for college financial aid, and English as Second Language classes. 

          Through the One Stop we also assist individuals with barriers to employment by helping them determine career goals; learn how to complete applications, resumes, interview and conduct job search.  At the One Stop customers have access to computers, job board, internet job search, copiers, faxes, telephones, postage needed to conduct a successful job search.

          Services are funded by Goodwill Industries Northern Arizona through the sale of donated goods and by Coconino Community College Department of Adult Education.

          GoodSamaritan Connection provides immediate family emergency assistance through access to showers, toiletry items, and essential clothing and/or household goods .  Services are funded by Goodwill Industries Northern Arizona through the sale of donated goods and by Wal-Mart.

          GoodNeighbor Connection links customers to vital resources at Goodwill and/or with community partners.  Anyone walking in the door is eligible for this service.  Services are funded by Goodwill Industries Northern Arizona through the sale of donated goods.

          As an intern, students have the opportunity to work in any of the above programs and services and, in addition, have the opportunity to work in other areas of the organizations such as marketing, public relations, business operations, and website design based upon interest and business need.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          The Light Heart Foundation is a nonprofit organization that has been conducting intergenerational service learning programs for 10 years. We have either semester or year long internship positions available in the Verde Valley area. These internships begin with an orientation and training in September in intergenerational concepts, strategies and programming. Under staff supervision, the interns will be assisting the moderation of Project H.U.G. (Helping to Unite Generations) which is a service learning program that brings students from elementary and middle school together with seniors in retirement, convalescent, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. The ideal candidate has excellent people and communication skills and is very comfortable working with both youth and seniors in a highly interactive manner within classroom and facility settings. An existing curriculum will be used, however, we are looking for creative input and feedback from the interns to enhance the program. There may be opportunity to expand the program to include the teen age group. Time commitment will be 5 to 10 hours per week and can be somewhat flexible. Positions require time spent both in the Cottonwood offices and out in the field and may include travel to Sedona, Cottonwood and Camp Verde. There will be travel reimbursement and a stipend.           The mission of NACA is to provide human and health services to individuals and families in a culturally appropriate manner emphasizing advocacy, harmony, respect and cooperation in all working relationships and community involvement at all levels.  Interns will have the opportunity to learn about all areas of NACA, including but not limited to, the Family Health Center (which is a common placement), Tobacco Education Program, Emergency Assistance Program, Health Education, The Pathways Program, Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Substance Abuse Prevention, Diabetes Program, and so on.  NACA is open to the interest of the student.  Fingerprint clearance is a must for the internship and the cost will be appropriated to the student.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          Northern Arizona Council of Governments is a nonprofit membership corporation representing local governments to provide a wide variety of services within the four Arizona counties of Apache, Coconino, Navajo, and Yavapai.  Although NACOG is a large comprehensive organization with many programs, currently internships are restriced to The Area Agency on Aging.

          The Area Agency on Aging program's purpose is to develop a comprehensive and coordinated system to deliver services to older individuals.  The agency is charged with securing and maintaining maximum independance and dignity for older persons and with removing individual social barriers to economic and personal independence.

          Students interested in interning with NACOG's Area Agency on Aging should choose between:

          • The Family Caregiver Support Program - A federal program enacted through the Older Americans Act Amendments of 2000.  The goals of the program are to provide supportive services to qualified individuals who provide care for an elderly person living at home, or to grandparent(s) raising a relative under the age of 19.  The services offered include case management, respite, caregiver training, home repair, assistive devices, and legal assistance.
          • Medicare/Benefits Counseling Program - A program where trained counselors assist with questions about Medicare, Medigap insurance, and other public benefits.

          The Office of Sustainability is seeking 5 students per semester for practical experience internships.  These are non-paid internships; however, the students could receive academic credit from the sponsoring college.  Projects can start in the fall 2008 semester and will be on-going. 

          The program is open to either undergraduate or graduate students.  All of the project would take place on the NAU campus and the Office of Sustainability has space to house the interns.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          The Northland Family Help Center provides safe haven, advocacy, and education for people living in unhealthy and violent relationships.  We envision a community where all people live in safety, where all forms of violence have been eradicated, and where healthy families and individuals serve as the foundation of a vibrant and productive community.

          All Interns at Northland Family must be at least 18 years old and able to obtain a fingerprint clearance card.

          NFHC's Women's Shelter provides safe shelter, advocacy and life skills training to women and their children affected by domestic violence.  Interns may be asked to answer the crisis line, assist with adult groups, assist with paperwork, sort donations, or help to keep the shelter clean and organized.  Interns are also expected to complete a special project while at Northland Family.

          The Children's Shelter provides shelter and respite care, family reunification, case management and life skills training for children and youth.  Interns may be asked to shadow and assist Behavioral Health Workers in providing direct care to the clients.  This could include facilitating life education groups and recreational activities, as well as assisting with paperwork.

          Our Community Education Program provides interactive presentations and trainings targeting rape prevention to children, teens and young adults.  Students would be asked to assist with trainings and general office tasks.  They could also be involved in planning and organization of events.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          The Northern Arizona Regional Gerontology Institute (NARGI) has several programs under their auspices.  These include the Senior Companion, Foster Grandparent, Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs as well as the Flagstaff Senior Olympics.  The first three programs utilize the skills of seniors age 55 and over to meet critical community needs by placing them to be volunteers with other homebound seniors, children with special/exceptional needs and with non-profit organizations such as homeless shelters, food banks, schools and hospitals.  The mission of the Gerontology Institute is to value and promote service programs which utilize seniors as assets to the communities in which they serve, lifelong learning opportunities for seniors, gerontology education through internships, graduate assistantships and research, public education through academically based conferences and workshops on aging, and program partnerships to maximize staff and funding resources.  The Gerontology Institute works with the elderly, but their internship program offers students a variety of possibilities, including, but not limited to developing cooperative and collaborative partnerships with other organizations, educational programming for seniors, developing activities, special events planning and report writing.  However, NARGI prefers to meet with students to determine what the student wants to learn and develop internships to help meet the student’s needs.  Please contact the Institute by phone to set up an appointment to discuss your internship possibilities.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          Parents Anonymous is a non-profit organization created to help parents develop positive approaches to parenting. PA offers a continuum of programs and services for the entire family, which include:  school-based services, parenting education and support, and permanency placement and systems change for children in the foster care system.  Interns may work with children promoting character education, facilitate parenting education classes, research and community outreach for Families For Kids and/or assist with children’s programs in the schools.  Programs are offered in English and Spanish at various sites in Flagstaff and Williams.  Parents Anonymous will offer students the opportunity to do community outreach, direct service to families, fund raising, evaluation and reporting, and other activities involving social service agencies.  Interns working with children will be fingerprinted and must have their own transportation.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

          Community Organizing Internship
          The internship is a collaborative position between Planned Parenthood Arizona and Arizona List.

          Arizona List is a Political Action Committee that endorses pro-choice, Democratic women to local and state office in Arizona. Arizona List is a grassroots donor network. We recruit, mentor, and help elect progressive women across the state.

          VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood is a national program sponsored by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America that offers a pro-choice voice on college campuses across the United States.  VOX was created in order to build a future of pro-choice leaders and to further the pro-choice movement at a local level. 

          This internship is an unpaid position for a student seeking experience in the field of grassroots advocacy and organizing.

          Location and Reporting Assignment: The Community Organizing Intern will report directly to the Internship Coordinators, who will provide supervision, direction and feedback as necessary. The intern may also work in conjunction with other Planned Parenthood and Arizona List staff and local board members as needed.  The intern in this position will work both on the NAU college campus as well as surrounding community, and occasionally at the Planned Parenthood health center in Flagstaff.   

          Specific Responsibilities: The Community Organizing Intern will:

          • Recruit, coordinate, and motivate volunteers;
          • Lead tabling and crowd canvassing activities, phone banks, activist meetings, and training with assistance from PPAZ and Arizona List staff;
          • Continue building the pro-choice movement through phone outreach and developing relationships with allied organizations;
          • Attend pro-choice and/or progressive campus and community meetings as a VOX/Arizona List representative;
          • Attend trainings and some statewide meetings/events;
          • Create publicity materials as needed for local activities and programs;
          • Perform and develop other projects and duties as needed and agreed upon.
          • Plan and work 1-2 Arizona List events in conjunction with staff and local board members
          • Arizona List membership cultivation
          • Work in conjunction with the community groups as a volunteer for various projects (Permanent Early Voting, Women’s Vote Project)

          Qualifications for the Community Organizing Intern:

          • Strong commitment to and/or experience with the pro-choice movement and support for the mission of Planned Parenthood of Arizona and Arizona List;
          • Interest in political action, grassroots organization and movement building;
          • Currently enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate degree program;
          • Ability to work independently, prioritize and handle a variety of projects simultaneously;
          • Outgoing, dynamic, and flexible personality;
          • Commanding verbal and written communication skills. 

          Supervisory Plan: The Community Organizing Intern will work closely with the Internship Coordinators to develop and maintain a pro-choice presence on their college campus and the surrounding community.  Deadlines for individual projects will be provided, and frequent communication should be established via in-person conferences, email and/or telephone calls.

          Time Commitment: Weekly hours to accommodate an individual schedule may be arranged with the Internship Coordinators. Adjustments to the schedule may be made as necessary.  The internship usually extends the length of one semester; beyond that the length of the internship is negotiable.  The intern must be able to commit a minimum 10 hours per week.  Weekend and evening availability required.

          Internship Benefits: The Community Organizing Intern will gain highly marketable experience in a professional atmosphere while simultaneously promoting pro-choice values within the Arizona community.  The Community Organizing Intern is welcome to attend various PPAZ and Arizona List trainings as their schedule permits, with approval from the Internship Coordinators.

          Additionally, if the intern meets the goals of the internship, he or she may have the opportunity to receive a free trip to Washington D.C. to attend the EMILY’s List conference on April 29th and 30th. Trip is contingent on the intern’s performance and goal accomplishment.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          Victim/Witness Services (V/WS) is a private, non-profit, non-governmental agency consisting of full- and part-time staff, volunteer victim advocates, and student interns working together to support victims throughout the criminal or juvenile justice process.  V/WS assists victims of crimes and crisis occurring within Coconino County, including: homicide, aggravated assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, armed robbery, child physical and sexual abuse, and DUI crimes with fatalities or injuries.  Services include immediate crisis intervention, crisis counseling, court escort, transportation to/from court, child care while testifying in court, assistance with victim compensation benefits, social service agency referrals, information on Arizona Victims’ Rights laws, victim and witness advocacy, follow-up support, and community education/public information.  These complete wraparound services are designed to help victims/witnesses and their families recover from the initial trauma of a crime and to cope with the difficulties and confusion involved in the criminal justice process.  Interns will be able to learn most aspects of a victim/witness program and may eventually manage a small caseload (with staff assistance and depending of number of internship hours per week).  Interns will be expected to assist with data entry and clerical work.  V/WS prefer students who are Junior Level or above, and who are mature, responsible and hardworking.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          Mission Statement: In loving remembrance of Curtis “Whale” Hansen the Whale Foundation provides confidential access to mental and physical health care professionals and a network of support services deigned to restore, promote and celebrate the well being of the Grand Canyon River Guiding Community.

          The Whale Foundation (WF) is a non-profit (501 c-3) organization dedicated providing Grand Canyon river guides with access to a variety of direct services including confidential mental health counseling and medical family practice professionals, financial planners and health insurance brokers, career counseling, life coaching and post secondary educational scholarship funds. As in most non-profit organizations, funding is a crucial component directly affecting the services we can offer and numbers of people we can help.

          Private and government grants are available to qualified non-profit organizations. The WF is seeking a student intern to assist with grant writing research and development. The temporary position would be under the direct supervision of the WF’s executive director. The intern would research and identify funding organizations or sources that are compatible with the WF mission. All potentially compatible funding sources would be earmarked for further review by the executive director. A grant proposal “template” would be developed to assist in all grant proposals and at least one grant proposal will be prepared and submitted by the end of the internship period. Any and all grant proposals will be reviewed and approved by several qualified members of the WF Board of Directors before submission.

          INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
          Williams Community Learning Center is a component of Williams Unified School District.  It is a program focused on “Systems Change.”  Systems Change is a joint effort by the community to understand the workings of the Williams community.  Together they explore how aspects of their community work or do not work and how they can change or improve those that do not work.  Williams Community Learning Center offers different placement in which interns can experience the workings of the community collaboration of Systems Change, the main one being with WAADA.  Williams Alliance Against Drug Abuse is an effort to unite the citizens of Williams to prevent and reduce the illicit use of Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs (ATOD) throughout the community of Williams.  The Alliance recognizes that strengthening families and providing positive life skills is one to the most effective ways of preventing substance abuse.  The Alliance brings together community resources to deliver services and activities to support the mission.  However, in addition to WAADA, this internship can include placement in other services Williams Community Learning Center offers, such as: Family Parent Center, Social Services Outreach, Volunteer coordination and recruitment, and a variety of Youth Programs (Fit & Strong, Pay it Forward, Builders Club, Spanish Club, etc.).  Williams Community Learning Center internship is a great opportunity to get involved with community collaboration.  They offer the opportunity for students to work in all areas of the program and are open to the interest of the student.
