Scholarship and award applications must be received by March 2, 2009 unless otherwise stated. Scholarships and awards are presented to recipients by the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences during an event in April each year and the awards are applied to tuition and fees for the following fall and spring semesters. Be aware that these scholarships and awards are contingent upon the availability of funds on March 1st of each year.

Instructions: Complete an application for all scholarships that you are eligible for. Expand on the eligibility criteria and provide explanation of your attributes, educational goals, needs, and why you are eligible to receive the scholarship or award especially if eligibility depends upon an essay or written statement. Tony Gabaldon Memorial Endowment
is awarded to a student committed to public service. Eligibility: undergraduate students pursuing internships in government and social work who are full-time; have declared a major within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; in good academic standing; and who show an interest in public service. Preference is given to Hispanic students.
Susanna Maxwell Award for Community Connections
recognizes a student who has been a significant volunteer in community activities. Eligibility: full-time undergraduate or graduate student with a declared major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences who has completed a minimum of 18 undergraduate or nine graduate hours of coursework from one or more departments within social and behavioral sciences with a 3.0 GPA or better. Must document volunteer contributions made to the northern Arizona community.
The Peaks Senior Living Community Scholarship
provides assistance to a student who shows interest in the study of aging. This scholarship was established by the Peaks Senior Living Community in Flagstaff, Arizona. Eligibility: NAU student; statement that describes interest in aging, future goals and how those may relate to aging and senior community service.
Mary M. Seaman and P. David Seaman Award for Native American Academic Excellence
honors a Native American student who has demonstrated academic excellence as a major in social and behavioral sciences. Eligibility: registered member of a recognized American Indian tribe; junior, senior, or graduate with a declared major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; academic excellence within the major; must have completed a minimum of 24 hours of social and behavioral science coursework as an undergraduate or 18 hours of social and behavioral science coursework as a graduate major. (Include your tribe on the application. Proof of tribal registration will be required when you are selected to receive the award.)
Melissa Anne Stalvey Scholarship
is to encourage young people who have had some difficult times progressing toward success in life. Eligibility: full-time NAU student with good academic standing in any major. Preference is given to a Coconino County resident. First priority given to a local student who has demonstrated desire to further his/her education in any degree program. Second priority given to a student who meets the same criteria from outside Coconino County. Third priority is given to a student who wants to pursue a career that supports the work of the juvenile court system through a major in psychology, social work, sociology or criminal justice. Applicant must provide a paper (approximately one-page) discussing “What you have learned from your past.”
Ferrell Honawu Secakuku Memorial Scholarship
supports a full-time Native American graduate or undergraduate student who is studying cultural preservation, entho-history, cultural curricula, multi-media, or a similar field. Eligibility: preference is given to a Hopi student who is enrolled in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences with undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5; graduate student GPA of at least 3.0; 1-2 page essay explaining background, why he or she is deserving of this award and future goals including a plan to give back to community.
Kenny Acord Award for Graduate Students in Archaeology
awards anthropology graduate students. Eligibility: preference is given for research focus in southwestern pre-history; original field, laboratory and/or collections research; multidisciplinary research; and application of research that leads to public interpretation of the past. Robert C. Euler Graduate Scholarship
awards a full or part-time NAU anthropology graduate student. Eligibility: GPA of 3.5 or better and demonstrated excellence in classroom performance and internship/research activities.
Panayotis Farantakis Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service Internships
are presented to NAU anthropology students. Eligibility: full-time (9+ hours a semester) anthropology graduate student in good academic standing who has completed 18 hours of graduate anthropology credit by the time the internship begins. Students may apply for the award during the semester they are completing the 18 hours. The award will be contingent upon successful completion of those hours. Applicant must have been officially accepted by an organization outside of NAU for an internship which is clearly humanitarian in nature that is, one that has a positive impact in the day-to-day living of other peoples.
William Griffen Native American Anthropology Scholarship
awards a student majoring in anthropology. Eligibility: preference is given to an undergraduate Native American student who has completed at least 15 semester hours. (Include your tribe on the application. Proof of tribal registration is required when selected as a recipient.)
Carleton T. Hodge Award for Academic Excellence in Anthropology
is given to an anthropology graduate student who has demonstrated academic excellence in anthropology at the graduate level. Eligibility: enrolled full-time at NAU as anthropology graduate student; 18 hours complete in graduate anthropology coursework at NAU; demonstrated academic excellence.
Miranda Warburton Anthropology Scholarship
awards students who are majoring in anthropology. One-half of the award amount is applied to fall semester and one-half to spring semester. Eligibility: NAU anthropology major and at least a 2.5 GPA.
Miranda Warburton Native American Anthropology Award
funds internships or research experiences. Eligibility: Native American majoring in anthropology whose focus is in health and human services. A joint proposal from the Native American student and a proposed researcher/internship mentor or program is required as these funds are intended to help provide direct mentoring and research experiences to Native American students. The award may be used for supplemental research experience or completion of thesis linked to on-going health or human services.
Audrey Tsosie Memorial Scholarship
is presented to a junior or senior Native American who is majoring in Applied Indigenous Studies. Eligibility: Native American, on-campus student in good standing with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, and demonstrated financial need. The recipient is urged to volunteer for the annual Institute for Native Americans NAU golf tournament.

Arizona Justice Educators Association Scholarship
is funded by criminal justice educators from the State of Arizona. This scholarship recognizes qualities of personal integrity, good moral character, citizenship, academic excellence, and critical thinking skills. Eligibility: currently enrolled in an Arizona post secondary institution; declared major in criminal justice, Arizona justice system, justice studies, justice system policy and planning, or corrections; 3.0 overall GPA and 3.0 GPA in major; good academic standing; completed 9 credit hours in the major field. Fraternal Order of Police Scholarship
is given to criminal justice majors who demonstrate commitment to a career in law enforcement. Eligibility: junior or senior, at least 3.0 GPA, demonstrates commitment to a career in law enforcement. Preference may be given to an Arizona resident enrolled as an on-campus NAU student.
Investigating Difference: Human and Cultural Relations in Criminal Justice Scholarship
is used to provide students with educational research, exemplary scholarly and creative projects. Contact or visit the department of Criminology and Criminal Justice to apply.
1. CJ 345 Writing Competition recognizes excellence in writing and depth of understanding about cultural differences. There are two writing competitions one in fall and the other in spring. Awards range $300-400. Contestants must be enrolled in CCJ 345 and have full-time status at the time of application.
2. Creative and Scholarly Projects Grant provides financial assistance to underwrite the costs of travel or special materials needed for an independent study, undergraduate research internship, a major class project or thesis research. To qualify, the applicant must be a NAU student in good academic standing, enrolled full-time and either be a CCJ major or enrolled in the CCJ graduate program. Awards are based upon merit and amounts vary.
3. Professional Development Grant provides travel support for attending professional conferences and criminal justice related workshops. To qualify, the applicant must be a NAU student in good academic standing, enrolled full-time and either be a CCJ major or enrolled in the CCJ graduate program. Awards are based upon merit and amounts vary. Applications must be received at least one month before the event.
James L. Keeton Police Science Memorial
awards a student planning a career in public law enforcement. The chosen recipient is determined based on academic achievement, merit, and financial need. Eligibility: full-time student at NAU in good academic standing; preference may be given for academic excellence.
James Michael Lewis Memorial Scholarship
goes to a student who demonstrates genuine commitment to pursue a career in law enforcement. This scholarship is a full in-state tuition waiver, but the amount can vary. Eligibility: undergraduate; Arizona resident; full-time student (12 hours or more per semester); declared major within a social and behavioral science program; good academic standing; evidence of campus or community leadership; statement of financial need. Preference will be given to those that demonstrate genuine commitment to pursuing a career in law enforcement in the State of Arizona and may be given to those with deceased parents.
Jeff Moritz Memorial Endowment
is awarded to one or more students enrolled at NAU as declared criminology and criminal justice majors. Eligibility: Junior or senior; preference is given to students who graduated from Flagstaff high schools.
Native American Criminal Justice Scholarship
awards a student who has declared a major or minor in criminology and criminal justice. Eligibility: must be enrolled as a full-time student at NAU. Preference is given to Native Americans.
Several scholarships are offered to students majoring in geography, planning or recreation. Eligibility: sophomore, junior or returning senior; 3.25 GPA or greater in major and overall GPA must at least 2.5; financial need is considered; applicant must have a minimum of one semester residency at NAU. Earl Shaw Memorial Scholarship
is given to students who are majoring in a Politics and International Affairs degree program: political science, international affairs, American political studies or public administration. Eligibility: NAU student who has completed 6 hours in POS and at least two semesters of coursework at NAU; GPA at least 2.5 although, preference may be given to applicants with 3.0 GPA or better; financial need; a description of your efforts to achieve a college education and plans for completing the degree program.
William L. Strauss Scholarship
is given to a student majoring in political science or American political studies. Eligibility: completed two semesters at NAU, completed 6 credit hours in political science at NAU, good academic record.
Jack and Ruby Vaughn Internship Scholarship
awards a political science graduate student. Eligibility: Prearranged internship.
is given to students who major in international affairs or political science. Eligibility: minimum 3.0 GPA.
Virginia Blankenship Undergraduate Research Award
is given to undergraduate students for financial support to present at a research conference. Eligibility: cumulative 3.25 GPA or higher, junior or senior status. To apply, submit a one-page (2-3 paragraphs) paper describing future educational goals and career objectives, unofficial transcripts and copy of resume. Describe the research conference where you wish to present. Include dates and location, copy of the abstract submitted and acceptance notice if available. Application materials are due in the Psychology office, building 65, room 228 by March 1.
William Gibson Outstanding Student in Psychology and Public Service Award
recognizes outstanding students that have demonstrated high academic standards and a desire to better the community through volunteer activity or public service. Eligibility: cumulative 3.25 GPA or higher, enrolled at senior status. To apply, submit an essay (2 pages or less) explaining how psychology studies and community involvement overlap, and the impact both experiences have made on your life or future direction. Vicki Green Psychology Thesis Award

Janie and Jeff Biddle Memorial Scholarship

Virginia Rae Kurner Memorial Scholarship
is awarded to a student with sincere intention to work in the social-work field. Eligibility: junior or senior social work major, enrolled for 12 hours or more, financial need, academic achievement and character.
Marie Adell Monbleau Memorial Scholarship
awards an undergraduate social work student. Eligibility: at least 3.0 GPA; 60 hours completed, financial need, and an essay explaining future plans in social work and how the scholarship will be used. Preference is given to a minority student.
Louise C. Spence Memorial Scholarship
is given to a student who is majoring in social work. Eligibility: Native American with at least 2.25 GPA; junior status or above; 60 hours of coursework completed; financial need; and an essay explaining future plans in social work and how the scholarship will be used. Janet K. Schnorr Memorial Scholarship
is given to an undergraduate student with emphasis or minor in Women's and Gender Studies. Eligibility: 3.0 GPA or better; enrolled at NAU; completed at least 30 semester hours. Applicants must include a one-page personal statement which demonstrates commitment to women's and gender studies issues and concerns; and one or two letters of support from others who know of your commitment to women's and gender issues and concerns.
