Ethnic Studies

What is the Ethnic Studies Program?

The Ethnic Studies Program at NAU was established in 2000 through the efforts of five faculty members from the Commission on Ethnic Diversity. The Program is governed by a steering committee consisting of the Director, full-time and affiliated faculty, and an administrative representative. The Ethnic Studies Program is in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

How will Ethnic Studies Enhance My Major and Professional Options?

Research demonstrates that diverse curriculum benefits all students and enhances the skill base and career potential of graduates:

  • Diversity courses teach students skills they will need to succeed in the 21st Century.
  • Diversity courses challenge students to think in more complex ways about identity and history, and avoid cultural stereotyping.*

For example, students of literature, sociology, education, political science, history, humanities, business, hotel restaurant management, to name only a few, find that related ethnic studies courses, enrich their academic programs and will appeal to future employers.
