In June of 2006, students and faculty of the Northern Arizona University Anthropology Department were greatly saddened by the death of Kenny Acord, one of the Department’s most promising students.  To those who knew him, Kenny was an exceptional person who embodied the best qualities of a professional archaeologist and Southwestern scholar.  Kenny was a gifted academic, a determined adventurer and outdoor enthusiast, and an authority on the cultural and natural resources of the Colorado Plateau.  He cultivated his love of the Southwest through years working as a river guide, as a professional archaeologist for the National Park Service and other federal agencies, and by completing a Master’s Degree in Anthropology at Northern Arizona University in 2005.

During his tenure at NAU Kenny produced a remarkable example of student research through his thesis, “A Ceramic Inventory and Chronological Analysis of Sinagua Settlement at Walnut Canyon National Monument.”  This 300-page study is a ground-breaking contribution to the prehistory of the Flagstaff area that exemplifies the type of original research that NAU Anthropology students are producing every year.

Through a generous endowment of $10,000 from Kenny’s parents, Bobby and Anna Acord, the NAU Anthropology Department has founded the Kenny Acord Memorial Award for Graduate Studies in Archaeology.  Additional contributions to this fund have already been pledged by many of Kenny’s professors and peers.  This award will fund original scholarly research by archaeology graduate students who represent the same ideals that Kenny stood for, while memorializing the name of this exceptional student.

Can you join our cause and make a gift to honor Kenny? Your contribution to this award will help to ensure the continued success of the NAU Anthropology program by attracting bright men and women like Kenny who are the best students in Anthropology. Ultimately, our goal is to raise $50,000, which will fund student research at about $2,000 per year in perpetuity.  We need your help to accomplish this goal.

We urge you to contribute to this important fund. There are a variety of ways you can give by mailing in the attached form. One great, convenient way to contribute (sort of like payroll deduction) is to have your credit/debit card charged on a monthly basis. You can also give on-line on our secure site (to do the monthly contribution you have to fill out the form below) by clicking on the following link and filling out the on-line form. In the "Other Designation" text box, type in fund #1540. NAU employees can make a payroll deduction by going to this on-line form and clicking  “form”, printing the form and sending it to the NAU Foundation. Online Contribution Link

Additional information about Kenny, the recipients of this award, and other updates will also be available on the anthropology website in the near future www.nau.edu/anthro.  Please pass along this letter to others who might be interested in giving. If you require additional information, please feel free to contact Wolf Gumerman at 928-523-3498.  Thanks in advance for your contribution.
