Applied Track

Thesis Track

Linguistic Anthropology Applied/Internship Track

This track prepares you for professional employment related to applied linguistic anthropology.  Philosophically, our program is action anthropology, which involves research, intervention, management, and advocacy in service to groups and organizations.

For this track, you must complete at least 42 hours of coursework, including an internship with an internship paper that you successfully defend. the coursework requirements are as follows:

The internship track requires a predefined sequence of coursework in order to complete the degree in two years.  Download the Applied Linguistic Anthropology Checklist (Adobe PDF/Word Doc) for more information.

For this 42-hour program, which involves completing an internship with an internship paper that you successfully defend, you take:

Theory (6 hours) 

  • ANT 600 Anthropological Theory (3)
  • ANT 603 Applied Anthropology (3)

Method (6 hours)

  • ANT 569 Ethnographic Research Methods (3)

Lab (6 hours)

  • ANT 514

Internship experience (12 hours)

  • ANT 607 Pre-Internship Seminar (3)
  • ANT 608 Fieldwork Experience (6)
  • ANT 609 Post-Internship seminar (3)

In addition, the following two Anthropology courses are required (6 hours):

  • ANT 614 Ethnography of Communication (3)
  • ANT 639 Anthropology of American Culture (3)

Related coursework approved by your advisor and must include 3 hours from the following:

  • ANT 714 Advanced Seminar in Linguistic Anthropology
  • ENG 504 Introduction to Language and Linguistics
  • ENG 518 Sociolinguistics

...and 6 hours to be chosen from:

  • ANT 581 Language, Power and Medicine
  • one ANT elective (i.e. ANT 599 Culture and Madness)
  • ENG 527 Folklore Theory and Techniques
  • ENG 528 Grammatical Foundations
  • ENG 612 Pragmatics
  • ENG 618 Introduction to Discourse Analysis
  • ENG 658 Second language Acquisition
  • ENG 668 Research Methods in Applied Linguistics
  • any appropriate ENG 700-level seminar with instructor approval

 

Linguistic Anthropology Thesis Track

For this track, you must complete at least 39 hours of coursework, including a research-based thesis that you must successfully defend.

The thesis track provides a bit more flexibility when it comes to coursework sequence than the applied track.  However, certain classes need to be taken during specific semesters.  Download the Linguistic Anthropology Thesis Track Checklist (Adobe PDF/Word Doc) for more information.

For this 39-hour program, which involves preparing a research-based thesis, you take:

15 hours of core requirements:

  • ANT 569 Ethnographic Research Methods (3)
  • ANT 600 Anthropological Theory (3)
  • ANT 605 Pre-Thesis Seminar (3)
  • ANT 614 Ethnography of Communication (3)
  • ANT 714 Advanced Seminar in Linguistic Anthropology (3)

Lab (4-6 hours)

  • ANT 514 (4-6 hours)

6-9 hours of remaining formal Anthropology coursework

3-6 hours of courses from the following courses:

  • ENG 527
  • ENG 528
  • ENG 612
  • ENG 618
  • ENG 658
  • ENG 668
  • ANT 581
  • or any 700 level ENG seminar with instructor approval.

3 hours of individualized coursework, such as ANT 685 or 697

6 hours of ANT 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis

(Please note that you can only count 6 hours of thesis credit toward your degree, even though you may end up taking more thesis hours because you must register for ANT 699 each semester while you are working on your thesis.)
