

Sociocultural Applied/Internship Track
This track prepares you for professional employment related to applied anthropology emphasizing sociocultural anthropology. Philosophically, our program is action anthropology, which involves research, intervention, management, and advocacy in service to groups and organizations.
For this track, you must complete at least 42 hours of coursework, including an internship with an internship paper that you successfully defend. The coursework requirements differ depending on whether you pursue the applied archaeology or the applied sociocultural emphasis, as we explain in the following sections.
The internship track requires a predefined sequence of coursework in order to complete the degree in two years. Download the Applied Sociocultural Track Checklist (Adobe PDF/Word Doc) for more information.
For this emphasis your coursework must include:
Theory (6 hours)
Method (6 hours)
Topical Emphasis (3 hours) - one course selected from:
or other cognate approved by your adviser:
Internship Experience (12 hours)
Parallel Emphasis (12 hours) - related coursework (must be approved by your adviser)
Total - 42 hours (minimum)
For this track, you must complete at least 36 hours of coursework, including a research-based thesis that you must successfully defend. The coursework requirements differ depending on whether you pursue the archaeology or sociocultural emphasis, as we explain in the following sections.
The thesis track provides a bit more flexibility when it comes to coursework sequence than the applied track. However, certain classes need to be taken during specific semesters. Download the Sociocultural Thesis Track Checklist (Adobe PDF/Word Doc) for more information.
For this emphasis, your coursework must include:
Total - 36 hours (minimum)(not to include more than 6 hours of ANT 511, 512, or 608)
*Please note that you can count only 6 hours of thesis credit, even though you may end up taking more thesis hours because you must register for ANT 699 each semester while you are working on your thesis.
