This track prepares you for professional employment related to applied anthropology in archaeology. Philosophically, our program is action anthropology, which involves research, intervention, management, and advocacy in service to groups and organizations.

For this track, you must complete at least 42 hours of coursework, including an internship with an internship paper that you successfully defend.

The internship track requires a predefined sequence of coursework in order to complete the degree in two years.  Download the Applied Archaeology Track Checklist (Adobe PDF/Word Doc) for more information.

For this emphasis, your coursework must include:

Core Requirements (27 hours)

  • ANT 524 Cultural Resource Management (3)
  • ANT 600 Anthropological Theory (3)
  • ANT 603 Applied Anthropology (3)
  • ANT 607 Pre-Internship Seminar (3)
  • ANT 608 Field Work Experience (internship)(6)
  • ANT 609 Post-Internship Seminar (3)
  • ANT 635 Archaeological Theory (3)
  • ANT 636 Archaeological Methods and Inference (3)

Cultural / Physical / Linguistic Requirement (3 hours) Any anthropology course offered outside the subfield of archaeology

Archaeological Thematic Emphasis (12 hours) In consultation with your adviser, you develop a program built from electives that move you coherently and solidly toward your interests in archaeology. You may select these 12 hours from department offerings and from appropriate-level outside course offerings. The courses must be relevant to an archaeological theme that both you and your adviser agree upon. Suggestions include cultural resource management, quantitative methods and/or computer analysis, materials analysis, environmental studies, diet and subsistence, Quaternary studies, public archaeology, historic archaeology, and ethnography.

Total - 42 hours (minimum)

Archaeology Thesis Track

For this track, you must complete at least 36 hours of coursework, including a research-based thesis that you must successfully defend. The coursework requirements differ depending on whether you pursue the archaeology or sociocultural emphasis, as we explain in the following sections.

The thesis track provides a bit more flexibility when it comes to coursework sequence than the applied track.  However, certain classes such as 605, 635, and 636 need to be taken during specific semesters.  Download the Archaeology Thesis Track Checklist (Adobe PDF/Word Doc) for more information.

For this emphasis, your coursework must include:

Core Requirements (18 hours)

  • ANT 600 Anthropological Theory (3)
  • ANT 605 Pre-Thesis Seminar (3)
  • ANT 635 Archaeological Theory (3)
  • ANT 636 Archaeological Methods and Inference (3)
  • ANT 699 Thesis (6)*

Archaeological Electives (18 hours)
Of these, 12 hours must be organized around a theme. No more than 6 hours of individualized studies (ANT 597, 685, or 697), may be counted for this component.

*Please note that you can only count 6 hours of thesis credit toward your degree, even though you may end up taking more thesis hours because you MUST register for ANT 699 Thesis each semester while you are working on your thesis.

Total - 36 hours (minimum)
