Northern Arizona University Anthropology

The mission of the Anthropology Department is to discover, disseminate, teach, and apply knowledge about culture, language, the human past and future, and human evolution and biological diversity.

NAU Anthropologists:

  • Educate students in the complexity, wisdom, logic, and beauty of the world’s cultures and the nature of their interrelationships;
  • Train professional anthropologists at the highest levels of theoretical and methodological capability;
  • Create state-of-the-art anthropological knowledge, especially knowledge that can be applied to the real world;
  • Serve Native American communities in the form of knowledge and public service;
  • Actively engage the public in our scholarly conversations about the human condition;
  • Promote cultural and lingusitic diversity as a strength, not a weakness, in healthy human societies; and
  • Contribute through scholarship, teaching, and service to societies and environments that can be sustained for future generations.
