SBS Student-to-Student Connections: Shadowing Program

SBS Student-to-Student Connections is a program that pairs Native American high school students with current NAU students in an academic program within the College of Social and Behavior Sciences for a day. We need NAU students who are willing to be shadowed for about half a day. Native American students are particularly wanted because they can act as role models. Other students are also welcome, however!

High school student participants will "shadow" their NAU mentor / guide throughout the day, attending their mentor’s classes and participating in the same activities as their NAU guide. High school participants will experience what it’s like to be an NAU student in SBS, and have a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the process from a student ‘s point of view.

The day will conclude with a gathering of the entire group of participants and student mentors, the three traditional knowledge scholars from the Resident Elders Program within the Department of Applied Indigenous Studies, and SBS faculty. At the end of the day, the high school student participants will leave with information about how to successfully apply to NAU and information about financial aid and student support services. We hope they will also leave with a sense of enthusiasm about the diverse academic majors available in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Northern Arizona University, as well as a sense of confidence fostered by getting to know students, faculty, and staff here within the College--but especially the students!
