

Accepting Learning Community applicants for the 2010-2011 Academic year
Sustainable Environments and Engaged Democracy (SEED) is a freshman residential and academic community in Cowden Hall that fosters awareness of and engagement with challenging ecological and social issues of our day. SEED enables students to learn and work with people of diverse backgrounds in order to foster creative and beneficial change in the world. This LC is ideal for students who are considering majoring in environmental studies, politics, anthropology, sociology, ethnic studies, education, women studies, and related fields.
Common Courses
Seats in certain classes will be reserved for SEED LC residents. Your advisor will help you enroll in these courses, which you will attend with other members of your LC. Visit Priority Enrollment to find out more about enrollment and advising. For fall ’10, seats will be reserved in:
FS 141 - Democracy, Social Justice, and the Environment
Explores grassroots democratic participating in relation to environmental sustainability, social justice, and diversity from the local level to the global. Hands-on practical learning opportunities are a vital component of the course. Fulfills liberal studies requirements.
Activities & Events
Each year LC residents can take advantage of exciting and meaningful activities planned for them by their Community Mentor and hall staff. Possible events in the SEED LC include:
Welcome Gathering Meet other LC residents and discuss future activities and events. Challenge Course Students will connect with other LC residents building teamwork and leadership skills high above the ground. Seed Hike Students will have the opportunity to build community by hiking up Arizona's highest mountain together. Faculty Dinner Students will have the opportunity to meet faculty through shared dinners and learn more about their field of study. Community Group Work Students will be able to work with faculty, graduate students, and community leaders in Community Based Research and Action Teams. The groups organize events and assist with promotion of education of their causes. The current groups range in interests from education, the environment and immigration. In Hall Lectures Students can participate in lectures by faculty and community leaders in the comfort of theory residence hall pertaining to issues important to the SEED LC.
