Accepting Learning Community applicants for the 2010-2011 Academic year

The Mathematics and Statistics Learning Community, one of the Engineering and Natural Sciences communities, is open to freshmen interested in majors within the department. Northern Arizona Uinversity offers several degrees in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. The department in committed to excellence in teaching and research in mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. The faculty working within the department place strong emphasis on effective teaching and engagement with all students within the major.  LC residents live together in Reilly Hall.

 

Common Courses

Seats in certain high-demand, major based classes will be reserved for Mathematics and Statistics LC freshmen. Your advisor will help you enroll in these courses, which you will attend with other members of your LC. Visit Priority Enrollment to find out more about enrollment and advising. For fall ’09, seats will be reserved in:

MAT 123 - FIRST YEAR SEMINAR
This course introduces first year majors to the academic content, degree programs, faculty, resources and opportunities available in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
 
MAT 125 - PRECALCULUS MATHEMATICS
This course covers the concepts of function, graphs, absolute value, linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, and systems of equations, in addition to analytic geometry. Students in the learning community who qualify for this course will be enrolled in the same class section.

MAT 136 - CALCULUS MATHEMATICS
Building on the foundations of precaculus, this course covers the calculus of one variable including basic concepts, interpretations, techniques, and applications of differentiation and integration. Students in the learning community who qualify for this course will be enrolled in the same class section.

Each year LC residents work with residence hall staff to plan exciting and meaningful activities. Possible events in the Computer Science LC include:
