
Accepting Learning Community applicants for the 2010-2011 Academic year
The Justice LC is a residential and academic community designed to introduce first year students to the field of criminology and criminal justice. Open to students interested in exploring careers in criminology and criminal justice, and those who wish to work in local and regional justice and social service agencies, and/or who seek volunteer opportunities that foster social justice. LC residents live together in Wilson Hall.
Common Courses
Seats in certain high-demand classes will be reserved for Justice LC residents. Your advisor will help you enroll in these courses, which you will attend with other members of your LC. Visit Priority Enrollment to find out more about enrollment and advising. For fall ’09, seats will be reserved in:
CJ 101: Introduction to Crime and Justice
This course introduces the branches of the U.S. justice system and the policies, processes, controversies, and challenges facing the justice system in the global world.FS 141: First Year Seminar: The Search for Justice
In a small seminar format, this course will explore what we (and others) mean when they use the word "justice," the intersections between economic, gender, racial/ethnic, civic and global justice, threats to justice in the 21st century, and pathways for building genuine justice.
Activities and Events
Each year LC residents work with residence hall staff to plan exciting and meaningful activities. Possible events in the Global Village LC include:
Welcome Gathering Meet other LC residents and discuss future activities and events Faculty Interaction Get to know faculty members from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Volunteer Opportunities
Students will learn about opportunities for volunteer work and internships in local justice agencies, social service organizations, and NAU units, including the Northern Arizona Justice Project and the NAU Police Department, as well as such agencies as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Northland Family Help Center, Victim-Witness Services, and AmeriCorps/PeaceCorps. Professionals in local and regional justice agencies and successful NAU Criminology and Criminal Justice alumni will visit the LC and describe their career experiences.
Community Mentor Support
The Community Mentor is a student staff member who provides leadership in the Justice Learning Community. Community Mentors assist students with their transition to the university, and connecting them with faculty and peers within their major and/or area of interest. The Community Mentor is assigned to help new students in making the transition to college life easier and assisting them in furthering their academic pursuits.
