

Accepting Learning Community applicants for the 2010-2011 Academic year
The College of Arts & Letters Secondary Education LC is a residential and academic community designed to introduce first year students to teaching middle or high school in the fields of art, English, history and social studies, French, German, Spanish, or music. Secondary Education students learn more about teaching opportunities, broaden their ideas of what teaching can be for them, and develop an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of teaching. Students will have opportunities to get early teaching experiences with master teachers. LC residents live together in Wilson Hall.
Common Courses
Seats in certain high-demand, major based classes will be reserved for CAL Secondary Education LC residents. Your advisor will help you enroll in these courses, which you will attend with other members of your LC. Visit Priority Enrollment to find out more about enrollment and advising. For fall ’09, seats will be reserved in:
ENG 105 - Critical Reading and Writing in the University Community
Covers the writing skills needed for completing university coursework.MAT 114 - Quantitative Reasoning
Contemporary quantitative methods, especially descriptive statistics, elementary probability, examples of statistical inference, linear and exponential models of growth and decay, and applicable discrete models. Fulfills liberal studies foundation requirement.
Activities & Events
Each year LC residents can take advantage of exciting and meaningful activities planned for them by their Community Mentor and hall staff. Possible events in the CAL Secondary Education LC include:
Field Trips Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of local businesses and schools to gain a better understanding of their career choice. They will also gain early teaching experience through collaboration with master teachers. Faculty Dinner Students will have the opportunity to meet faculty through shared dinners and learn more about their field of study. Job Shadowing & Career Speakers Students will have the opportunity to observe other students pursuing similar teaching experiences. They will also be exposed to a variety of career opportunities through guest speakers brought in to work with the LC students. Advising Program Students will discuss their schedules, future academic plans and career options with an expert in their field.
