Credit Requirements

Students living in residence halls must be registered for, and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework per semester (9 credit hours for graduate students), and be pursuing a degree. Provided space has been made available to all full-time students, we will consider exceptions to this policy.

Students living on campus for the summer are required to complete 6 credit hours over the course of the summer OR be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester.

Contract Information
There are different types of contracts:

- Single student full academic year
(includes fall and spring semesters)

- Single student spring only
(option on academic year contract)

- Summer
(for single, couples, and family students attending summer)

(for students attending a summer workshop)

If you are uncertain as to which type of contract you have or need, please contact our office.

If you have misplaced your contract terms, you may view it online by going to the Applications page. Winter Session Housing

The residence halls are open during Thanksgiving and spring break. However, the residence halls close at the end of fall semester, Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10 a.m. for the winter break. They will reopen prior to the spring semester on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 9 a.m.

Winter session housing is only available for students currently living in Tinsley, Gabaldon, McKay Village, or Pine Ridge Village, as part of their academic year contract. There is no additional Winter session housing available for students not living in these designated halls.

If you live in another hall, and wish to move for the remainder of the academic year to one of the four listed halls, limited space may be available and additional charges may apply. Please contact our office for availability. Visit our winter session housing page for further details.

Summer Housing

We offer housing during the summer to students attending summer session classes or to students who are pre-registered for the fall semester.  For complete information, visit summer & workshop housing.

Room Changes

It is never to late to request a room change, roommate, or buyout a room or apartment.

We try to accommodate as many changes as possible as long as space allows. Most changes occur over the summer before the school year starts, during the first month of school, and during the winter break. During this time, we continually evaluate change requests and process them as people cancel their housing or change their academic plans. Fraternity and sorority recruitment occurs during the first month of school and opens additional spaces for students to move into.

If you need to request a residence hall accommodation based on a documented disability, please contact Disability  Resources at 928-523-8773, (928-523-6906 TTY).

Requesting a Room Change - If you wish to make a request during the summer or winter break, you will need to complete a Lifestyle Request Change.

If you are making a request during the academic year, you will need to contact your Residence Hall Director (RHD) at your hall front desk.

Requesting a Roommate - All roommate requests must be mutual by both parties in order for us to place you together in a room.

If your requested roommate currently lives on campus, you and your roommate request will need to contact your hall staff to assist in moving you together.

If you wish to live together for the next academic year, you will both need to apply together during Housing Reapplication in the spring semester.

If your requested roommate does not currently live on campus, you both will need to submit a Lifestyle Request Change. Placement depends on application date, specific request, and available space - the more detailed the request, the lower your chances of us being able to meet it.

Requesting To Buyout a Double Room or Apartment - If space allows, sometimes rooms or apartments are sold to students as single rooms or apartment buyouts - additional fees will apply.

If you wish to make a request during the summer or winter break, you will need to submit a Lifestyle Request Change.

If you are making a request during the academic year, you will need to contact your Residence Hall Director (RHD) at your hall front desk.

Scholarships

Each spring our department offers scholarship funds to residence hall students. This program has been made possible through a generous donation from the Web Corporation. The process has ended for this year, please visit our Scholarship page early next spring.

Standards of Residence

The Standards of Residence is contained in the Student Handbook under Appendix H. All students are expected to abide by the University's Code of Conduct.

Student Organizations
Our department works closely with many on-campus student organizations to bring program opportunities to the residence halls, as well as encouraging residents to be an active part of their campus and community.

The following links are a few student organizations that are directly affiliated with our department, as well as more information about other campus organizations.

Residence Hall Association (RHA)
The Residence Hall Association, is the second largest student organization on campus. RHA is a representative governmental organization that represents the 6400 students living on campus and serves as their voice. You can get involved in RHA by joining your residence hall council or becoming an independent representative for a campus club or organization.

NRHH
The National Residence Hall Honorary, is a service of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. NACURH firmly believes in the value of student involvement in residence hall life through community service, social programs, and educational programs. It exists to honor with local, regional, and national recognition students making outstanding contributions to their residence halls. NRHH is the only nationwide organization that recognizes residence hall leaders.

Membership is through nomination and application and is limited to one percent of the residence hall population, or 15 members, whichever is larger.

Minimum membership criteria include one year of on-campus residency, contributing positively to the residence hall system and at least a 2.0 GPA.

Greek Life
Deciding to become a member of a fraternity or sorority is a decision that many students question during their college experience. Our system prides itself on its uniqueness and on its diversity of chapters. Currently, NAU is host to eight sororities and fourteen fraternities, including a predominantly Hispanic fraternity and sorority, as well as a historically black sorority.

If you are interested in leadership opportunities, performing community service and building lifelong relationships with others that share similar interests, then joining a fraternity or a sorority may be a logical decision for you.

Community & Hall Councils
Each residence hall has a council of residents that address community concerns, plan activities, and act as the liaison to other student organizations. To get involved in the council for your community, contact your resident assistant (RA) or residence hall director (RHD) for more information.

Other Organizations
NAU has many other opportunities to be involved in a club or organization on campus. For a more detailed list, please visit the Office of Student Life
