Congratulations on taking your next steps toward graduating from NAU!
Please note that Commencement and Graduation are separate concepts and events.
Commencement Ceremonies
· Are ceremonial and symbolic
· Participation does NOT mean you have graduated.
· It is a time for you, your family, friends, and the Northern Arizona University community to celebrate your accomplishments.
Graduation
· Graduation Application must be filed
· Fulfillment of degree requirements resulting in the conferral of a degree and the physical production of a diploma
Applying for Undergraduate Graduation
All students who wish to graduate from NAU must file a graduation application.
Applications for Graduation filing fee:
· $35 per degree earned (will be automatically billed to your LOUIE account once your graduation application is received/processed by the Registrar’s Office
· Failure to pay this fee will prevent a diploma and official transcripts from being issued
You are required to file your graduation application the term prior to your intended graduation term (except for College of Education majors who are required to submit their application 2 terms prior to their intended graduation term).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I file my graduation application by the deadline?
Beginning the graduation application process early is in your best interest as it can alert you to any unanticipated course requirements with enough time to complete them before or during your final term.
What if I need to make changes to my graduation application?
Any changes to your original application must be done via a Graduation Addendum form. Please contact your advisor for help filling out this form.
What if I elected to have my directory information unpublished?
If you have elected to have your directory information unpublished but wish to have your name in the Commencement program, please stop by the Registrar’s Office to fill out a waiver form by the deadline date(s) listed above.
What if I have transfer credits that still need to be sent in to NAU?
Once you have filed a graduation application, please send any official transcripts from another institution directly to the Graduation Office, NAU, PO BOX 4103, Flagstaff, AZ 86011.
How do I earn baccalaureate honors at graduation?
Completing 45 or more NAU hours and having an exemplary GPA with no more than 6 units of failing grades for the entire NAU undergraduate record, regardless of whether the failing grades were unrepeated, repeated, replaced or averaged are required. (Repeating a course in which an "F" grade was earned does not eliminate the "F" grade from the inclusion in determining Baccalaureate Honors.)
Appropriate GPA thresholds will be college specific. GPA thresholds are recalculated for each calendar year (i.e., Spring though Winter) using data from the preceding calendar year.
For each graduation period (i.e., Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter), Summa Cum Laude will be awarded to candidates whose cumulative GPA meets or exceeds the 5% threshold for their college. Magna Cum Laude will be awarded to candidates whose cumulative GPA meets or exceeds the 10% threshold for their college (but not the 5% threshold), and Cum Laude to candidates whose cumulative grade point average meets or exceeds the 20% threshold for their college (but not the 10% threshold).

Baccalaureate honors designations by student names in commencement programs are tentative until all final grades are reported.
When does my degree become official?
Approximately 4-6 weeks after grades finalize you will receive an email to your NAU account informing you when your degree was awarded and when to anticipate receiving your diploma.
If we are unable to award your degree, you will receive an email to your NAU account with an explanation and what follow up is required.
You can view your transcripts on LOUIE at Student Center> Academic History> Other Academic> Unofficial Transcripts> Unofficial Transcripts.
Please check your NAU account to ensure there are no “HOLDS” on your student account. Your diploma cannot be mailed to you until all “HOLDS” are cleared.
