American Red Cross Swimming Lessons

The American Red Cross has introduced an update to their swimming lesson program. The WAC will be implementing this new update for summer 09. A new category has been added to address the need for easier progression and advancement through each level. Preschool levels 1-3 have been added for children ages 3-5. This should help those children whom are ready to move out of the parent-child class better adjust to individual lessons and make progress in learning their new skills. Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-6 are designed for children ages 6 and up. They have been reorganized with several of the strokes being moved around to different levels than they were before. This reorganization of the various stokes may be a challenge for some returning participants because they will not have learned the pre-requisite strokes yet for the level they are now enrolled. We will make every attempt to catch these individuals up to the new curriculum, but some may need to move back one level to learn the new strokes so they will be able to keep up in the next level.

Swimming Lesson Class Overview

Parent-Child Aquatics levels 1-2 are for children ages 6-months to 3 yrs. These classes are designed to teach children to be safe in, on and around the water. Parents or other caregivers are taught information and techniques to help orient their children to the water and to safely supervise water activities. This class is not designed to teach children to learn to swim or even to survive in the water on their own.

Preschool Aquatics Levels 1-3 are designed for children ages 3-5 that are independent and comfortable in the water and can function without a parental presence. Preschool aquatic classes are designed to give young children a positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience. Participants will be exposed to basic aquatic skills and begin to learn rudimentary propulsive swimming movements on both the front and back. Appropriate personal safety and rescue skills are included to help children meet safety goals.

Learn-to-Swim levels 1-6 are designed for ages 6 and up who are independent and can function without a parental presence. The objective of the LTS program is to teach participants to be safe in, on and around the water and swim well. Participants are taught aquatic and personal water safety. Throughout the levels, participants build on their basic skills to learn various propulsive movements on the front, back and side. As the levels increase, participants learn to refine the different strokes and build endurance.
