Northern Arizona Masters (NAM) is a coached swim workout group that trains at the Wall Aquatic Center (WAC) on the NAU campus. Anyone who can swim laps and is 18 years old or older can become a member. We currently train five evenings and two mornings per week with some Saturday mornings. We offer an organized and structured swim workout, tailored to different speeds and abilities. This provides opportunities for improvements in aerobic fitness, overall strength and stroke efficiency and quality. This is not a lap swim situation. We ask all swimmers to do the same workout to take full advantage of the social opportunities and the workout plan (if special circumstances exist such as a special event or an injury accommodation can be made). We also offer some social structure and get together occasionally for a night out or a full-fledged party.
Although most of our swimmers are here to develop or maintain fitness, some of our members compete in Masters meets or are active triathletes. We don’t require it, but we encourage all swimmers to join the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) organization, which gives them the opportunity to compete and interact with over 40,000 other swimmers nationwide.
Liz Hobbs is our program manager and one of several coaches we have to run this program.
Liz’s Coaching Philosophy
Masters swimming has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience for me since I started in 1987. I’ve made friends all over the country, and as I moved around in my career I’ve found friendly and fun masters swimmers everywhere. People who can spend hours at a time swimming back and forth all seem to have a lot in common, whether they are 18 or 85 years old. One of my favorite things about masters is that it brings people of all ages together and gives them common ground. Countless times in my masters experience I’ve enjoyed great meals and get togethers with fellow swimmers and have had the chance to meet and speak with all kinds of people that swimming has brought together.
We all know the benefits of swimming in our lives, including better health, fitness and stress relief. NAM swimming will also give you:
The unique thing about masters swimming as a sport is that it doesn’t matter how good you look or how fast you swim. Anyone who can swim a lap can participate and improve. Your goals may include losing weight, gaining strength and fitness, or becoming more comfortable in the water. Whatever your goals are, we look forward to helping you achieve them at NAM!
At NAM, we are fortunate to be based at Flagstaff’s best swimming facility, the WAC. We swim 5:30-7 PM Monday-Friday, and 6-7:30 AM Tuesdays and Thursdays. Most weeks we will also have Saturday morning workouts. Although our swimming sessions are scheduled for 1-½ hours, we are flexible with time of attendance. Come and go whenever you need to. We feel that a little swimming is better than no swimming at all. So when life makes heavier than usual demands on you, just join us when you can.
We are fortunate to have several coaches who will be working with the program this year. They include:
After a brief hiatus, Rob is back and coaching his 5th year with NAM. He previously coached masters for 3 years at the Scottsdale recreational masters team. He has competed in triathlons at the collegiate level and is a 2nd year USAT pro. Rob also works for WL Gore.
As a great addition to our coaching staff last year, Ben is in his 2nd year as a coach with NAM. He comes from a swimming family and has coached and swam at several different levels.
Matt is in his 1st year of coaching masters. He has been teaching ARC swimming lessons and NAU lap swimming classes for the past two years. He is originally from Tucson, AZ. Matt was a sprinter/middle distance runner in High School and enjoys rock climibing, Mt. biking and running in his spare time. He is currently finishing up his degree in Anthropology and will be entering the U.S. Air Force after graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Jeff is a former WAC Lifeguard and Triathlete. He helped NAU take 5th place in the Collegiate National Triathlon Championships back in 2000. He comes from a swimming background with his younger brother currently swimming at the University of Wisconsin and winning the 2009 BigTen title in the 200 yd butterfly. He is excited to be back working at the WAC with the NAU Masters program.
To swim with NAM, you purchase a punchcard, and we punch you when you attend a workout. Cost is $35 for 10 punchcard, or $60.00 for a 20 punchcard. Please note that cards expire 6 months from date of purchase. Visiting Masters swimmers can purchase a daily Masters visit for $5 with USMS membership card, $6 without card. The cost is $6 for daily public admission to Masters swimming.
We hope this information answers any questions you may have about our program. If you have other questions, please call Liz Hobbs at 928-773-4655 or Lizhobbs@aol.com. We look forward to seeing you at our practices.
