We are the Northern Arizona Rugby Football Club (aka, the Landsharks), and we play competitively in the Arizona Rugby Union (ARU). We compete against other men’s rugby clubs (usually not colleges) in the area, including Las Vegas, Yuma, and numerous teams from Phoenix and Tucson. This club was formed on NAU campus by then-current players in 1978, making it, we believe, the longest consistently running club on campus. There are players from that period on, who have made their lives and careers in the Flagstaff Community, including attorneys, contractors, bankers, small businessmen, scientists, teachers, professors and students.
Players from over the last 30 years consistently come back to Flagstaff, and to the NAU community, for the world’s longest running Ten’s Tournament, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in October, 2010. This event, which we hope will bring 60 teams to Flagstaff, is our biggest fundraiser, and is a great tradition of which this club is exceedingly proud.
This Club does not hold tryouts, as anyone willing to come to practice consistently, learn the game and the rules, and willing to give their all is not only welcome, but encouraged, to come out and work with us toward good health, camaraderie, lifelong friendships, and, of course, victory.
Our consistent attendance at the Climb to Conquer Cancer, our willingness to step up and volunteer when asked or when opportunity arises, and our enduring history of being one of the most disciplined, least penalized Rugby Clubs in our Union, make us feel as though we are representing this University, and this community, in a way of which both should be proud.
Our season typically runs August to early April.
