Building a new relationship with your student
Sending your child to college is a transition for every member of the family. Fortunately, there are many resources to help guide you through this process. The excerpt below represents only one book out of a list of resources that can be found by clicking here.
From Letting Go, A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years by Coburn and Treeger:
“I looked to my parents for support a lot freshman year. I needed to know that it was OK to tell them I was going through a hard time. I felt there was no way they could help me specifically….What helped was to hear them show interest-show that they had faith in me. It was important to me that they be concerned that I wasn’t doing well. I needed them to be calm, to listen, not to lecture. They were terrific and that really made a difference even though I had to work things out for myself on campus.” (Page 245).
