Vol. 4 No.28 March 14, 2008

The BackPack is taking a spring break and will not publish a regular issue on March 21. We will return as scheduled on March 28.

The benefits of living on campus
You can't blame students for wanting to live independently. Before your student acts on the impulse to live off campus, he or she should take stock of the very real advantages of on-campus living. If your student already lives on campus, let him or her know that campus housing reapplication for fall 2008 starts March 25!

Living on campus is a great intermediary step between living at home and living alone. While living in a residence hall, your student's basic needs are met, allowing him or her to focus on succeeding in the classroom. Some other advantages include: convenience, affordability, academic success and resources, social ties, community and diversity. Read more...

  • Campus Dining takes care of food shopping, cooking and cleanup. Eating on campus also provides your student with healthy, balanced meal options that microwaves can't deliver.

  • Your student won't be hauling clothes back and forth to the Laundromat. Every residence hall provides laundry facilities located near your student's room.

  • You won't have to worry about your student's safety either. There are locked and monitored entries, and  Resident Assistants are on duty nightly.

  • Parent generosity supports students
Last week in the BackPack we were able to congratulate the latest recipients of the Parents' Association scholarships. Starting after spring break current students will be calling to ask for your support of this program for next year. We hope that you will join us in supporting this important program. We appreciate your generosity and we look forward to helping additional students in the future.

    Spring break tips

    Athletics Update
Four divers from the NAU swim and dive team will represent the Lumberjacks at the 2008 NCAA Zone E Regional Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., from March 13-15. NAU’s two senior divers, Danielle Borth and Natalie Hughes, will be looking at a legitimate shot of earning a spot at the NCAA Championships.

Borth and Hughes will be joined by freshmen teammates Megan Collier and Taryn Harris. All four qualified with scores from early on in the season, not even needing their recent strong performances from the conference meet. At the zone meet, the four will compete on the 1-meter Thursday, the 3-meter Friday and the platform Saturday.
