A native Hawaiian bird that has developed a resistance to disease has captured the attention of university scientist Jeff Foster. Handbook highlight: changing a class schedule
It is common for students to sign up for more classes than they intend to take.  The idea is to try the classes and then choose the ones that work out best.  If your student is thinking about adding or dropping a class, there are some important deadlines to keep in mind.

Encourage your student to add classes by January 25, the last day to add a class with no penalties.  If a student needs to drop a class, it should be done by February 8, the last day to Drop/Delete without the class appearing on the student's transcripts. The complete enrollment calendar is available here. For more information on academics, visit the Parent Handbook.

Student spotlight:  Erica Sanford
What matters to me is having endless opportunities to contribute to campus and getting involved in important events such as MLK Day.
Year: Senior
Hometown: Phoenix, Ariz.
Major:
Community Health
Why did you choose your major?
There's a need for more health education to reduce the incidences of illness. I like people and like to see them happy and healthy. If you're healthy you can live life.
Favorite campus activities?
Homecoming, Black Student Union activities, carnival night, and Prochnow movies on campus.
Favorite campus hangouts?
Timber Inn on north campus. I'm a Resident Assistant in Morton Hall and it's a really close community up there.
Which campus organizations are you involved with?
I'm vice president of the Black Student Union and currently coordinating volunteers for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day program; finding performers and speakers, and coming up with ideas to make this year's program a little different with more student participation.
Your best achievement so far?
I became a Resident Assistant last semester and I was worried about how I would balance my job with my academics. I got four As and one B, and am really proud of that.

Career aspirations?
I want to be a health educator working with children who are obese or have diabetes.

How do your parents support you in your education?
My parents are paying for my education, but they also help with ideas for reports and study tips. I talk to my Mom three to four times a day, just to check in.
