Mentoring Undergraduate Students

Using Graduate Students to Prepare Undergraduate Students for Graduate School

Mentoring is an important aspect of student success both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  In the past, mentoring was largely reserved for graduate level students; however as universities develop ways to enhance undergraduate education, mentoring of undergraduates is increasing.  Mentored undergraduate students demonstrate a higher GPA, a lower drop out rate and a greater number of units completed per semester when compared to non-mentored students.

The approach of this project is to mentor undergraduate students interested in pursuing a graduate degree.  Through the process, undergraduate students will be exposed to graduate school life and receive assistance with their application.  This opportunity will clarify for the undergraduate the dynamics of graduate school and offer hands-on training for the graduate student who plans to teach at the college level and advise students.

Gifts to this project will benefit five graduate students and 15 undergraduate students by providing funds for the advertisement of this project, stipends for guest speakers and the graduate students, refreshments, and printing costs.  Seminars and workshops in conjunction with this program will be offered through out the year for all Northern Arizona University students.

The amount still needed to make this project possible is $3,150.
