This is a large comprehensive request that will significantly affect 50 students directly and more than 3,000 students indirectly. Northern Arizona University uses 50 undergraduate students as guides during Discover NAU visits and as leaders/mentors for the six weeks of Orientation. Those students will come into contact with every incoming freshman. Those freshmen will look to the guides/leaders/mentors for answers, some guidance, possibly friendship, and an honest representation of the college experience. Being prepared to represent the university accurately, effectively, and make a great impression is very important.
Student Leader Conference Attendance
Each year conferences are offered which allow our student leaders the opportunity to meet other student leaders, to share ideas, to teach or present proven programs that they have developed, and to build a successful team. The student leaders travel by van or bus to the conference and spend a weekend attending sessions directly related to their responsibilities on campus. Our students gain a more global perspective relating to their university responsibilities and the students they service while learning valuable skills from professionals.
Amount still needed to make this grant possible $11,550.

Student Recognition
Recognizing the culmination of a successful year of serving the needs of incoming freshmen would symbolize the importance of helping each other on the Northern Arizona University campus. Providing a plaque to the individual student leader and a commemorative tablet for the university would promote past accomplishments and create a desire in others to participate in the future. A celebratory banquet would also allow staff to acknowledge the efforts of the team and provide the student leaders the opportunity to reflect on their accomplishments. Additionally one or two of the student leaders who have expressed an interest in staying with this program would be rewarded with the opportunity to attend a conference typically attended by the professional staff. In kind donations would also be welcomed.
Amount still needed to make this grant possible $5,250.

Distinctive Attire
In a large group of students it is necessary to be able to recognize who is the leader which is why distinctive attire is provided. By being visible, the new students can easily spot those leaders that can offer assistance. Because of the variety of weather we encounter in Flagstaff, the needs vary from light polo shirts to sweatshirts or jackets.
To reduce the costs of this grant, in kind support is welcome from donors who produce or sell such attire or from donors who have the ability to customize the attire with our university logo or other markings.
Amount still needed to make this grant possible $5,250.00.

Student Leader Scholarships
The opportunity to reward good deeds is very satisfying. Every year several student leaders stand out as exemplary with their work - the energy in which they do their job and their commitment to making a difference in the lives of the incoming students they help. As a reward to those student leaders who have excelled in their work, a $1,000.00 scholarship would be awarded. This would be a welcome financial boost that would supplement their small one time payment.
