Analyzing the environment we live in neighborhoods, communities, and cities requires more than just examples provided from text books and lectures. It requires first hand knowledge. Two courses offer by Northern Arizona University explore the specific issues that affect towns and cities of the Southwest. Part of the curriculum includes field trips; walking tours of downtown Flagstaff, boom-town growth in Southern Colorado, and examining solutions to transportation and housing concerns in Los Angeles.
This project will partially fund a field experience in the Los Angeles metro area. Students who are learning about regional transportation planning, downtown redevelopment and historic preservation, historic urban development, architectural history, sustainable urban design, and environmental and community sustainability will be able to witness real examples. After visiting the Los Angeles area, they will return to their classrooms and either present a formal class project or a mock proposal to the Los Angeles Planning and Zoning Commission.
Gifts to this project will be used for travel and lodging expenses for 30 students and their instructors. Additional funding will come from the students and the college.
The amount still needed to make this project possible is $3,150.
