This grant will enable the Center for Environmental Sciences and Education to defray the cost of a weekend field trip to Glen Canyon Dam followed by a half-day river trip from the Dam down to Lee’s Ferry. The grant will enable 92 students to make a connection with the Colorado River and Glen Canyon Dam in a way no other activity can provide. Taking the students out of the classroom in a more informal setting with faculty provides a learning environment that is highly effective. Students learn more about invasive species or water management when they can see the issue right before their eyes.
This experience will help our students establish a sense of place, especially for students from an urban environment while connecting with the Colorado River, the source of water for more than 25 million South westerners. Our students will begin to understand some of the complexities of water resource management in trying to meet many needs for water and power supply and environmental and cultural resource protection.
Gifts to this project will be used for transportation costs. The students participating in this field trip will cover their personal expenses including the cost of the river trip.
The amount still needed to make this project possible is $1,428.
