Safety and Perceived Risk

Each activity on the Challenge Course has been developed with great consideration for the safety of each participant and the group. We follow the guidelines established by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and have our challenge course inspected by Challenge Works, a Professional Vendor Member of the ACCT. We are constantly reading about the latest industry trends and upgrading the equipment that we use to meet industry standards.

Many activities that we do use perceived risk to create a learning experience while minimizing the actual risk to the participant’s health. This teaching strategy uses a sense of adventure to allow participants to overcome perceived mental and physical barriers.

For this methodology to be successful, each individual will be empowered with the ability to make the choice on their perceived risk level. Individuals will not be forced to do any action, unless their physical or emotional health is dependent on the action. For example, a participant can choose to not climb on a high element but does not have the choice whether or not to wear a helmet while climbing.

If you have other questions about safety on the NAU Challenge Course or would like a copy of our latest inspection report, please call us at 928-523-5010 or email challengecourse@nau.edu.
