Experiential Wilderness Retreats

An experiential Wilderness Retreat expands the NAU Challenge Course experience and adds the adventure of the natural environment of the Southwest.

Many of these experiences are custom built to meet your organizations goals and needs. Listed below are a few of the options that are available:

Centennial Forest Overnight

Just a short drive from Flagstaff, the Centennial Forest has been established as an "outdoor laboratory" for NAU. We have partnered with NAU’s Forestry Department to be able to provide overnight experiences on their field campus.

The field campus includes wall tents and bunk beds that sleep up to 38 people. A large ramada that is perfect for meetings, picnics and group meals. Most importantly, access to the world’s largest continuous Ponderosa Pine forest, wildlife viewing opportunities and star gazing that may be unmatched in the state.

Amenity Programming

  • Interpretive Programming with Forester Cheryl Miller
  • Primitive Living and Outdoor Survival Skills with Elliot Spaulding
  • Interpretive Programming with the Arboretum
  • Map and Compass Challenge with Adventure Racer and Ultra Marathon Runner Tom Nyce

San Juan River Adventure

NAU Outdoors (Parent of the NAU Challenge Course) has partnered with Ecological Monitoring and Assessment at NAU to provide 3, 4 and 8 day rafting experiences down the San Juan River.

We can provide a fully rigged river adventure through the ancient sites, breathtaking landscapes and waves of the San Juan River. As you pass through this rugged wilderness, our trained facilitators will use adventure-based activities and processing tools to draw out learning.

Amenity Programming

  • Interpretation from a Tribal Perspective with a Native Elder
  • Interpretation with an NAU Anthropology Professor
  • Primitive Living and Outdoor Survival Skills with Elliot Spaulding
