Through the arid lands of southern Utah, a serpent of water known as the San Juan River has been a special destination for ancient cultures and modern adventure seekers. While on the water, students are surrounded by breath-taking cliffs, unique ecosystems and the occasional class III rapid. Paddling either 12ft inflatable kayaks or 18ft whitewater rafts, students can enjoy the sun of Utah with the cooling water of the San Juan just an arm’s reach away. While not on the water, students can expect primitive camping, with excellent meals prepared in Dutch Ovens and grills on sandy banks near the water. Not far from the water, short day hikes offer incredible cultural history in the form of ancient Native American pueblos and petroglyphs. Throughout the experience, workshops and activities are facilitated by NAU Outdoors’ river guides and trip leaders. Examples of workshops include natural cultural history of the San Juan, Leave No Traces principles and practices, safe boating techniques, and swift water rescue. The San Juan River Adventure is an unforgettable experience that introduces new students to this unique southwest treasure and each other.
