Lead the next generation of students to success by sharing your experiences. Mentors participate in the Pathways to Success event, as well as working with new students throughout the academic year. Make your transition to campus a smooth one with this program designed to connect new students with each other through skill building activities, learn to navigate the university campus, understand academic requirements and begin your path to success.
Receive academic and financial aid guidance as well as connection to great campus resources for new freshmen and transfer students throughout the academic year. Qualified Native American students who complete program requirements may receive up to $350 a term/semester for two years. This program provides hands-on research opportunities and faculty mentoring for Native American freshmen interested in health-related professions and environmental scientific research. The program provides a scholarship up to $8,000 for college expenses. For an application packet, click here.
Celebrate and honor the achievements of Native American students who graduated in the prior December commencement and for those graduating at the May commencement. Student participants wear traditional indigenous attire or business attire.
Enjoy a complimentary meal and connect with students, faculty and staff. Event held off campus at Kiwanis Park (south campus).
From 2005-2008, Northern Arizona University has been a Gold sponsor of the largest tribal fair in the United States, the Navajo Nation Fair (Window Rock, AZ) Several staff, faculty and students participate in the 5-mile parade walk and provide educational information about the university at the exhibit booth in Nakai Hall. For 2009, Northern Arizona University will have an information booth in Nakai Hall and will participate in the Saturday parade (9/12/09).
In November, campus-wide festivities commemorating American Indian heritage are held by student organizations and individual departments. Events include the annual Miss Indian NAU Pageant and Native American clubs sponsor activities to promote awareness of American Indian culture.
