"Native Roots, Native Futures" Campaign

NAU has launched the Native Roots, Native Futures campaign which will:

  • Enhance the academic experience of native students
  • Improve retention and graduation rates
  • Enrich the campus community by increasing visibility of Native American cultures, traditions, and programs
  • Strengthen recruitment of Native American students, faculty and staff

Campaign goals include $7 million for the Native American Cultural Center and $2 million for scholarships and programs.

President John Haeger has generously invested $4 million in building construction. To date, $2,856,200 in individual gifts and pledges have come in to build the Native American Cultural Center, leaving $143,800 yet to be raised.  An additional $325,650 has been raised toward the $2 million goal for scholarships and programs, leaving $1,674,000 to raise.

Building
The dream of opening the Native American Cultural Center is a reality, and our goal of raising $3 million dollars for the building construction is almost met (only $143,800 left to raise!). With your help, we can achieve our goal by October 14 when the doors officially open.

Scholarships and Programs
The cost of a college education continues to increase and there is a need to develop and enhance programs to increase retention and help our students be successful.  An investment in a student scholarship is an investment in our future.

Won't you invest in the future of our Native American students? Give now.

Design Progress

NAU hired a design team, led by architectural firm Studio Ma, to complete the design for the building. The team has held focus groups and design charettes with students, faculty, staff, and alumni. They completed a conceptual design based on recommendations and ideas that emerged from these meetings. President John Haeger had invited leaders from the 22 Arizona tribes to campus on July 14, 2009 to discuss the Native American Cultural Center and provide input to the process. Also in the summer of 2009, a construction firm was chosen for the project: mid-sized, Arizona-based Brignall Construction.

Throughout the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters, the “design family” held multiple sessions for decision making in the design process and displayed renderings of the evolving design at various events. The “design family” is a small committee comprised of different voices representing various end-users and stakeholders of the Center. The building was sited at the northeast corner of Knoles Drive and McCreary Drive, in a prominent, civic area of the campus. It is centrally located next to the Cline Library, Fieldhouse, and Student Union. Construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2010 with the Center open for Fall 2011 semester.
