Academic Success: Rethink your strategy
Use this time to think about and develop your strategies for success, before you get too deep into the semester. To be more successful, you will need to think about some of the following issues.
1. What are you worried about? We all worry about the future. However, people who try to anticipate the problems and challenges will have more time to deal with them.
a. What are the critical courses you will be taking next semester?
b. What should you know about your Instructors?
c. What campus, work and community activities will support your goals?
d. Are certain weaknesses holding you back?
e. Are you on the right path?
2. Talk with upper class students, professors and advisors about the courses you are taking. Find out:
a. How the teacher teaches?
b. How difficult are the tests? (What makes them difficult?)
c. What is required? (Reading, Papers, Projects, Presentations, Group Activities)
d. Where can you obtain assistance, if you find that you need help?
f. How important is the text in each class? (So you sell it back before the 25th)
4. Know the Professors you are taking?
a. Investigate their likes, dislikes, preferences, idiosyncrasies and reputations.
b. How can you make certain that they will view you in a positive light?
c. Make a determination regarding which Professors are best for you.
d. Which Professors are known and respected beyond your college campus?
e. How will you strengthen your relationship with these Professors?
f. Which Professors look to students for help with research and projects?
g. How will you deal with the idiosyncrasies of critical Professors?
5. What campus, work and community activities will enhance your resume?
a. Ask advisors, professors, upper class students, alumni and employers about activities that will enhance your skills and abilities.
b. Think in terms of where you can make a positive contribution.
c. Participation in campus, work and community activities gives you the opportunity to build a list of accomplishments that will impress potential employers.
6. Be Aware Of Your Strengths and Weaknesses.
a. List the strengths, skills and abilities that come naturally and easily to you.
b. Make a list of the critical weaknesses that are holding you back.
c. Continually look for opportunities to demonstrate your strengths.
d. Look for opportunities to practice and strengthen one weakness that is critical to your success. Conquer a fear.
7. Are you on the right path? Step back periodically, to make certain that you are heading in a direction that will work for you.
a. Do you enjoy the courses you are taking in your field of study?
b. Are you good at what you are doing?
c. Are you happy most of the time?
d. Does this field of study turn you on?
e. If you have a part-time job that is related to your field of study, do you like it?
f. If you consistently answered "no" to questions 7a - 7e, talk with your Advisor, the Gateway Student Success Center, Alumni, Employers and Career Counselors to get some other perspectives. Almost everyone makes a few adjustments along the way.
