Changing Faces in the Multicultural Student Center
During the month of February, the Multicultural Student Center has gained a new face. Tadzia Dennis-Jackson has joined the MSC as a Senior Program Coordinator by way of the Gateway Student Success Center, where she served as a Career and Academic Advisor. Tadzia has called Northern Arizona University home through her Bachelors’ and two Masters’ degrees, and the MSC is pleased to have her on our team.
On February 12th the Multicultural Student Center hosted a reception honoring Hilda Ladner for all she has done for the Center and the University. Hilda has served as Director of the MSC for seven years and will continue her work as the Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Equity and the Director of the Multi-Ethnic Center for the University of Minnesota at Morris. Hilda’s last day at Northern Arizona University will be on the 22nd. Feel free to stop by the Center as we bid farewell to our dedicated Director.
B.D. Wong: World's a Stage, Transformation from Exclusion to Inclusion
Award-winning actor B.D. Wong will take the stage during his talk, "All the World's a Stage: Supporting the Transformation from Exclusion to Inclusion." Best known for his portrayal of forensic psychiatrist Dr. George Huang on NBC's 'Law & Order Special Victims Unit.' Wong speaks to audiences about the lessons he has learned regarding racism and tolerance. His résumé includes acting and directing on and off Broadway and in numerous movies and television shows, filmmaking, and writing his memoir, "Following Foo: The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man," published in 2003. Wong won a Tony Award for his Broadway debut in the Madame Butterfly. His memoir features topics he speaks about, such as his personal experience of being a parent in a gay relationship. "B.D.'s life has given him a keen perspective on the subject of diversity," said Kelley Horn, an NAU career and academic adviser who was so inspired when she heard Wong speak in New York City last year, she submitted a proposal to NAU's Student Activities Council for funding to bring him to NAU.
This lecture presentation is hosted by the Gateway Student Success Center. The event is free and open to the public, but requires tickets from NAU's Central Ticket Office at (928) 523-5661. For more information contact: Kelly Horn at 523--3357 or at Kelley.Horn@nau.edu
Ever wonder which fork to use? If you would like to find out, here’s your chance. The Gateway Student Success Center is hosting an Etiquette Dinner on the 4th of March (Tuesday). The dinner will serve as a wonderful networking opportunity for students. Community professional and NAU Staff members will assist students in what is deemed appropriate for professional dinners.
IT IS FREE. The event runs from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Inn at NAU. Students are expected to dress professionally, be on time, and stay until 7:30 at least. One community member and one staff member will sit at each table of six. The community member will talk to students about opportunities at their worksites, and the staff member will take notes and provide gentle but honest feedback via e-mail after the event so that students will know all the things they did well and areas for improvement. This is a gentle environment to practice etiquette skills among caring professionals.
Interested? To register for the event, email Joey Ruiz at: jjr44@nau.edu, with “Etiquette Dinner” as the subject. Seats are limited, see you there.
