Services

The MSC also sponsors a variety of outreach programs and activities targeted toward new and returning students. Programs include:

Peer Advisor Program

Peer advisors are juniors, seniors, and graduate students working under the direction of the MSC. They work with students on a one-to-one basis to assist students with general transition issues, financial aid questions and to discuss satisfactory academic progress.

Clubs and Organizations

The center sponsors, coordinates and assists ethnic student clubs and organizations including fraternities and sororities in the promotion of cultural, recreational, and educational events.

MSC Newsletter

Threads is a publication directed toward the interests and concerns of multicultural students. The newsletter shares relevant information, highlights important issues, and promotes exciting activities at NAU.

Local Scholarships

The center assists in the coordination of a variety of scholarships from private donors including, the Coordinating Council for Mexican-American Affairs, and the Wilson Riles Fund.

Recruitment

The MSC assists the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with their efforts to recruit under-represented and ethnic high school and community college students. The MSC staff participates in university recruitment programs.

Education and Awareness

The MSC educates and informs the NAU community on issues relevant to the students it serves. The center sponsors an open house for new and transferring multicultural students each semester and co-sponsors an annual reception for multicultural students. The staff of the center frequently participates in discussions on diversity awareness and the recruitment and retention of multicultural, first-generation, and low-income students.

Financial Aid Guidance

The center provides guidance, explanation and assistance on financial aid procedures, policies and forms. The staff guides students through the application process for financial aid, loans and scholarships.

Counseling

As a support to the University Counseling and Testing Center the MSC provides confidential guidance to you on an individual basis to deal with any situation that may occur. The MSC also makes referrals to the Learning Assistance Center

Administrative Support

The MSC provides select administrative services for student emergencies and to cultural clubs and organizations. These services include nominal use of telephone, fax and computers.
