

Gary Vallen is a full Professor in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University. He became one of the original core of faculty members when the program was initiated in 1988, joining the team after almost two decades of industry management. In industry, Vallen worked a variety of positions, including: senior management positions in hotel operations, casino gaming management, vice-president and assistant general manager positions of hotel casino operations in Nevada. Other industry positions include: sales and marketing management, restaurant operations, and private city/country club association management.
Dr. Vallen received his undergraduate degree in Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Following his Bachelor’s degree, and despite the long hours of industry, he simultaneously worked and earned an MBA degree at the University of Nevada, Reno. Later, after entering the field of university academia, he was awarded a Doctoral degree with an emphasis in Hospitality Management and Casino Gaming from Northern Arizona University.
Along with a successful career in education, marked by over 36-refereed articles and numerous national and international presentations, Dr. Vallen is also active in several professional associations including CHRIE and the Federation of Hoteliers. Vallen serves as editor of six separate national journals all dealing with a range of hospitality industry topics. Additionally, he has served as commissioner on the Board of Commissioners of ACPHA (Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration). Dr. Vallen has served on several other boards of directors for various hotels and associations related to the hospitality industry.
Vallen’s research interests include hotel operations, feasibility studies, and management assessments. Additionally, Vallen has an expertise in the field of Casino Gaming Management. Each year, he performs dozens of charitable casino night events; secret shopper audits of various hotel operations; and visitor studies at ski resorts, major fairs, rodeos, and events.
Dr. Vallen’s publications include a variety of articles revolving around topics such as burnout in the hospitality industry, the prevalence of casino gaming operations in the United States, and bed and breakfast research topics. Additionally, he is co-author of the best-selling hospitality industry textbook Check-In Check-Out (currently in its 8th edition, published by Prentice-Hall). Editor of another text entitled A Host of Opportunities; An Introduction to Hospitality Management (currently in its 2nd edition, published by Prentice-Hall). And has written chapters in several other texts including; Hospitality in Review; A Capstone Course, Tourism and Gaming on American Indian Lands, and of course, A Host of Opportunities; An Introduction to Hospitality Management.
