Allen Z. Reich, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the School and Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University. He holds a B.B.A. in Management from Texas University, an M.H.M. from the University of Houston, and a Ph.D. From Virginia Tech. Reich’s teaching history, which has centered around Hospitality Marketing and Human Resources Management, includes posts at Virginia Tech (in its Hospitality and Tourism Management Department) and the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. During his private sector career, Reich owned, managed, cheffed, and consulted for restaurants and has experience in multi-unit, chain, and independent food-and-beverage operations. There are few restaurant consultants in the country with Reich’s breadth of experience. His assignments have included layout, design, construction, menu development, preparation of employee and operations policies, creating marketing plans, pre-opening training, and solving operations, human resources, marketing and cost control problems. Reich is a frequent expert witness on topics including restaurant operations, cost controls, feasibility, finance, marketing, human resources, civil rights law, ADA, sanitation, and security. As the lead restaurant expert witness, he recently helped successfully settle the $1.6 billion Boston Market law suit for the investment firms of Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Banc. He has been recognized by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education as its seventh most prolific author and has twice been ranked as one of the 100 most influential authors in hospitality journals (based on the number of his articles cited). He was twice recognized in Who's Who of University Educators.

Allen has held the positions of secretary/treasurer, vice-president, and president of Rocky Mountain CHRIE (Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Educators). He has chaired the School's Research Committee and Committee on Faculty Status (helps determine tenure and promotion) and has been a member of a number of committees, including the University’s Committee on Diversity in the Curriculum and Student Housing. In addition to being a past Senate representative for the School of HRM, Reich as served as the Secretary of the Faculty Senate and the University Executive Committee (seven members) that meets with the President of the University to help set initiatives and policies. In the coming year (2009/2010) he will be the Treasurer of the Faculty Senate and chair of the Budget Council that examines University budgets before implementation.
