Jonathan Hales, MBA, EdD., Assistant Professor. Professor Hales teaches Senior Seminar, Hospitality Accounting and Resort Management. Previously he has served as Director of Native American Programs and Intern Coordinator for the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Dr Hales joined HRM after 25 years with Marriott International including positions as Controller at the St. Louis Airport Marriott and Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Palm Springs, Resident Manager at the Houston Greenspoint and Miami Airport Marriott Hotels, and General Manager at Tampa Westshore and Miami Airport Marriott Hotels. He served on the Board of Directors of the Hillsborough County Hotel Motel Association in Tampa, Chairman of the Marriott Business Council in Miami and is the recipient of the Marriott Superior Service Award for leadership during and after Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Dr. Hales has a BA in Economics and Certificate in International Relations from the University of Utah, MBA in Finance from Arizona State University, and ME and EdD in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. He currently serves as a charter member and Treasurer of the Enterprise Board for the Ft McDowell Yavapai Nation overseeing the operations of six tribal enterprises and ex-officio member of NAU's Institute for Native Americans Advisory Board. He is currently Chairman of the Flagstaff Industrial Development Bond Authority. He organized, is co-owner and president of a Limited Liability Company (LLC) that owns and operates two restaurants on the Navajo Reservation. Dr. Hales is actively involved with many of the hospitality companies that recruit at NAU and has completed faculty internships with Omni, FourSeason, and Hyatt Hotels and Pappas Brothers & Darden Restaurant Companies.
