RSVP Volunteer Opportunities

RSVP of Northern Arizona matches active adult volunteers age 55 and older with volunteer opportunities. The goals of RSVP volunteer opportunities are to meet the needs of our communities and to provide the volunteer with a meaningful volunteer experience.

Flagstaff

Arboretum at Flagstaff

The mission of the Arboretum at Flagstaff is to increase the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of plants and plant communities native to the Colorado Plateau, to identify, evaluate, display, and introduce plants adaptable to the climatic and soil conditions of the Flagstaff environment, to seek through scientific research innovative solutions to conservation issues of this high altitude environment, and to develop educational programs that will increase the understanding of the need for wise stewardship of our natural environment. Volunteers attend a spring training (April 25, 2007) to train to serve as educational guides, greenhouse and garden workers, maintenance, or with staff in the office.

Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County is to help people achieve their goals, strengthen personal dignity and build community connections by providing basic English Language and literacy tutoring with trained volunteers. Volunteers attend the LVCC training and are matched with a student. Volunteers and students work out their own meeting schedules.

Grand Canyon Trust

The Grand Canyon Trust is a regional, non-profit conservation organization that advocates collaborative, common sense solutions to the significant problems affecting the region’s natural resources. The Trust, founded in 1985 and currently celebrating its twentieth anniversary of conservation advocacy, has a variety of short term volunteer activities available.  Recent projects have included reseeding native plants, invasive plant removal, and vegetation sampling.

Goodwill Industries of Northern Arizona

Volunteers for the Goodwill Industries of Northern Arizona serve in the one-stop center to assist individuals with job search skills. This volunteer will need to be computer literate and able to teach others about using the computer. This agency prefers a volunteer who can provide 3-4 hours per day.

Riordan State Park

Riordan State Park, located on Riordan Drive seeks volunteers for a variety of activities. Docents and educational tour guides are always needs, as well as volunteers for the visitor center, dusting of artifacts in the mansion, grounds maintenance and repair, assistance with special events, and community outreach. Riordan State Park is open seven days a week and training is provided to all volunteers prior to service.

Sun Sounds

Sun Sounds of Arizona provides audio access to information to people in the Southwest who cannot read print because of disability. Training is provided by Sun Sounds. Volunteers may either read on-air regularly or may read/tape subject matter interesting to the volunteer for future air time. Volunteers are also needed for the control booth, outreach in the community and assistance in fundraising for the program.

Children's Issues

RSVP for Children's Literacy

In Flagstaff, Williams & Ash Fork. RSVP for Children's Literacy places volunteers age 55 and older into classrooms throughout Northern Arizona to assist with children's reading skills. Through this project, older adults are able to invest in the future of a child's education. Volunteers may work one on one or in small groups with elementary students. Guidance is provided by the teacher. RSVP provides an orientation, resources and social networking meetings with other literacy coaches during the school year. Volunteers must be willing to have a background check done and enjoy working with elementary age children of diverse backgrounds. Schedules are generally flexible and worked out with the teacher, but activities do take place during the school year. This activity is primarily in Flagstaff, Williams and Ash Fork. Kinder Camp

In Flagstaff. RSVP provides volunteers to the Pathways to Learning summer Kinder Camp Program. This camp is 5 week half day program for children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall. It is designed to assist identified children who have not had much exposure to literacy during their early childhood. Volunteers must enjoy spending time with children and reading to them, be willing to work with disadvantaged populations and be willing to have a background check. Camp is in the mornings M-F at various Flagstaff USD locations. Volunteers may choose the location and decide how many hours/days a week they would like to go. Orientation and training is provided.

Big Brothers Big Sisters STARS Program

In Flagstaff. Volunteers are needed as mentors to children of incarcerated parents. This is a community based program rather than a school based program. Volunteers (known as Bigs) plan to spend approximately 2 hours a week with the children (known a their littles). Volunteers are encouraged to incorporate the child into your life, go on outings as well as just spend quality time together. This opportunity allows the mentors to be a positive role model to children academically, socially and just for fun! Volunteers attend training and receive general support and guidance from Big Brothers Big Sisters. Volunteers need to make a year commitment to the child they are a mentor to.

Health & Safety Volunteer Activities

Flagstaff

RSVP Senior Safety Project

58% of emergency calls are for Senior Citizens. Prepare elderly and medically frail populations for a medical emergency by assisting with the distribution of the FILE of LIFE. When completed, this file quickly provides vitally important personal medical and contact information for the bearer to emergency response personnel.

Activities include:

Volunteers are asked to attend community events to distribute the File of Life, and other items to the general public. This activity is sporadic with no set schedule. Volunteers may participate as much or as little as they want. As RSVP organizes events, volunteers are asked to attend. One or two events occur monthly at various locations. Public speaking to small groups and individuals is expected to educate others on the File of Life. Volunteers will need transportation to event. Email is helpful for communication with RSVP. RSVP supplies all items for you.

Friendly Visitation with Elderly

20% of residents in assisted living facilities are isolated and lack visitors. RSVP Friendly Visitors provide much needed interaction with facility residents in hopes to prevent depression and encourage interaction among other residents.

Activities include:

Volunteers visit the elderly and disabled at Infinia Health Care, an assisted living facility. If you have a special skill to share with residents, or would like to teach a craft or class this is also welcome! RSVP expects a minimum of one hour per visit day. This activity is very flexible to your schedule. Consistent visits are encouraged to build relationships with residents. Volunteers with patience and the ability to engage with individuals who may be hard of hearing, not able to communicate well, or even unresponsive at times are needed.

Coconino County Community Services - Senior Services Programs

There are several volunteer opportunities with Coconino County Senior Services. All volunteers must be willing to have a background and fingerprint check done. Transportation will be needed to visit homes.

  1. Friendly visitor to a home bound senior. Check in on a homebound senior to provide them with social interaction and light assistance around the house. This is flexible in amount of time a volunteer serves. Visitation occurs at the home of the Senior Services client.
  2. Friendly Shopper for homebound seniors. This volunteers assists seniors who are no longer driving by either doing the shopping for the senior or with the senior, this volunteer will enable the client to continue living independently longer.
  3. Friendly Phoning - This volunteer provides telephone calls to home bound seniors three times a week. The phone call is to check in on the client to see how they are and to provide needed contact. This can be done from the volunteer's home.
  4. Meals on Wheels rider - assist with the delivery of Meals on Wheels. Volunteers rides with the MOW driver and delivers the meal to the clients door.

Victim Witness of Coconino County

Provide crisis intervention, victim assistance, witness advocacy, crime prevention education and victim compensation to assist in alleviating emotional physical and financial needs of victims while promoting the constitutional rights of victims. Volunteers receive 20+ hours of training prior to service. Volunteers choose when they want to be on call. If called to a situation, volunteers work in teams to provide assistance to those in need. Volunteers are also needed for agency fundraising activities and administrative assistance

Northern Arizona Food Bank

Northern Arizona Food Bank's (NAFB) mission is to transport, store, and distribute food and commodities to thousands of Arizona's most impoverished. Working in conjunction with existing social service agencies, churches, civic organizations, food banks, and national hunger relief organizations, our food bank is determined to wipe out malnutrition and extinguish the flames of hunger in Northern Arizona.

AARP Driver Safety Training

Today, having graduated over 9 million persons since its inception, the AARP Driver Safety Program remains one of AARP's most visible community service programs, and is a key element of AARP's efforts to support "livable communities." The goal of livable communities is to ensure, enhance and sustain mobility and housing options which enable persons age 50+ to remain in their communities. Each year approximately 34,000 classes are held in communities nationwide. Four out of five of our graduates tell us they change driving behavior as a result of taking our course. Each year over 700,000 people complete the AARP Driver Safety Program nationwide. Volunteers will attend training to assist in teaching these classes.

Navajo County

Food Banks

These food banks are run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are needed for all activities to run the food banks: pick up, distribution, administration.

Winslow Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program

Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals at lunchtime Monday through Friday to homebound seniors in Winslow. These meals provide seniors with 1/3 of their recommended dietary allowance. These meals help seniors to maintain their health and provide an outlet for socialization. Volunteers for Winslow MOW drive and deliver all meals.

Show Low Police Department Senior Patrol

The Senior Patrol, an award-winning volunteer program for the Show Low Police Department, is accepting applications from candidates meeting the following qualifications: 55 years of age or older, retired, male or female 2) In good physical condition, with a valid Arizona driver’s license. Full-time resident of the White Mountains. Willing to work four to five days a month. Patrol shift hours are 8 a.m. to 3p.m. Monday through Friday. Able to pass background screening and fingerprinting

American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter Prescott Valley

Volunteers provide transportation services for elderly and disabled in the Tri-City area.

Chino Valley Food Bank

Chino Valley food bank is completely run by volunteers. Volunteers provide the pick up, sorting, and distribution of all food. Other activities include the intake on clients, and administrative assistance.

Ash Fork Food Bank

Ash fork Food Bank is completely volunteer run and provides nutritional goods to help enhance the living conditions of community members

Ash Fork Historical Society

The Ash Fork Historical Society is run entirely by older volunteers who serve the general public by providing 4th grade AZ History lessons, overseeing general operations of the Society, and writing for enhancement grants.
