Gerontology Classroom

As a Foster Grandparent Volunteer, you serve as a mentor, tutor, and loving care giver to children and youth with special or exceptional needs.  Use your life experiences and wisdom to help change the future for a child who needs you. Make a difference.

Volunteer Requirements

The Foster Grandparent Program is open to men and women who:

  • Are 60 years of age or older
  • Meet income guides as established by the federal government
  • Care about children and want to help their individual growth and development
  • Are physically and mentally able to serve
  • Accept supervision as required

Program Goal

The goal of the Foster Grandparent Program is to enable low-income persons aged 60 and over to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem through continued participation in needed community services.

Benefits

In return for your service you will receive the following:

  • An hourly stipend of $2.65
  • Meal and mileage reimbursement
  • Secondary insurance coverage while volunteering
  • 40 hours of pre-service orientation and 4 hours of in-service training monthly
  • vacation and sick leave
  • Recognition for volunteerism with youth

Bilingual Needs

If you are bilingual in Spanish, Navajo, or Hopi, your skills are especially needed. There are a number of children who do not speak English as a primary language and would be grateful for a Foster Grandparent like you.
