This memoir chronicles the recruitment, life altering circumstances, hardship, and redemption of Beah, caught in the middle of Sierra Leone's civil war and recruited through the pressures of starvation, violence, fear, and drugs to participate in it. NAU's summer reading program, now in its 12th year, has chosen Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier as its text for the 2008 August discussion event. As part of the Summer Reading Program, Beah will be coming to campus in October to discuss the book and his experiences both during the time that the memoir took place and afterwards.

The March 26 discussion session is aimed at faculty who are curious about the book as well as interested in using the book within one of their courses. The session will provide a discussion of the book's central features, break-out sessions designed to explore the book's classroom potential, and tips for discussion topics and writing prompts both centered on the book's issues and applicable across disciplines.
