GC 599 Seminar in College Teaching, Spring Semester, 2012
Course # 4722
1 credit, Pass/Fail
Mondays, 3:00pm – 3:50pm
Eastburn Education, Room 174
Instructor of Record: Linda Shadiow, Professor of Educational Foundations and Director of the Faculty Development Program
This seminar will examine the impact on college teaching that is inherent in the research literature on how students learn. Participants will apply seminar work to their teaching practices in their content fields.
The resource book, Teaching Your First College Class: A Practical Guide for New Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors, will be used to frame the discussions. This seminar is primarily intended for graduate students with teaching responsibilities (in courses and/or labs).
Some of the key questions that will be addressed in this seminar: What perspectives do I bring to my teaching and how do they impact my curricular choices? How can students be productively challenged and effectively supported in their learning? In what ways can students be actively engaged in learning content and processes in the discipline? What kind of assignments and feedback on assignments has a meaningful role in furthering student learning?
Within the class there will be opportunities to apply course materials to classes participants teach, to do reciprocal teaching (getting and giving feedback on teaching), and to undertake an applied seminar project related to one’s work.
