Flagstaff and the Outdoor Classroom

The "Mountain Campus" of Northern Arizona University is in Flagstaff, about a two-hour drive (140 miles) north of Phoenix. A small city of 60,000 people, Flagstaff is 7,000 feet in elevation, at the base of the 12,000-foot San Francisco Peaks. Surrounded by the world's largest continuous ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Winters offer dazzling skiing at the nearby Arizona Snowbowl and in the forests and mountain meadows. Spring and fall offer hiking and mountain biking, or climbing and swimming among the nearby red rocks of Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon.

The Colorado Plateau is an ideal laboratory for the environmental sciences. The region contains outstanding biological and geological phenomena, vast tribal lands, and an ancient human history.

Numerous national parks and monuments are nearby, including Montezuma Castle, Sunset Crater and the Grand Canyon. This fantastic outdoor classroom is one of the most attractive aspects of the Environmental Sciences programs at NAU.
