Academy 2012 Summer Jobs

 


 

General Instructors and Latin Elements Instructor

(Upward Bound only)

Certified high school teachers in English, math, social studies, and/or science team teach an integrated curriculum (General Instructors). The goal of Academy is to increase students’ interest and skills in science, mathematics, social science, and humanities utilizing a Culture of Sustainability curriculum while introducing students to college life, emphasizing social, cultural, personal, and leadership skills. 

Academic Schedule

Instructor Training: Approximately Wednesday, June 6 - Saturday, June 9, 2012

General Classroom Instruction:  Monday, June 11, 2012 - Friday, July 6, 2012

Latin Elements Classroom Instruction & Office Hours:  Monday/Wednesday/Friday 1:30 pm - 4:30pm from Monday, June 11, 2012 to Monday, July 2, 2012 (class on Saturday, June 16, no class on Friday, June 22, 2012, and class on Saturday, June 30, 2012.  Graduation on Saturday, July 7, 2012)

Team Leaders

 

The Team Leader is in charge of planning and implementing the programming activities for the participants of the Academy. They work with the Residential Hall Director (RHD) and another Team Leader as a direct supervisor for the Summer Leaders. Team Leaders are also in charge of student conduct meetings, supervising the Desk Assistants and other tasks as outlined in the job description. They live in the dorm and receive a meal plan and a $2,000.00 stipend.

Summer Leaders

  • Mentor a small group of high school students, building supportive relationships and leadership skills.
  • Plan fun and high-energy recreational, educational, and leadership activities.
  • Work with a great staff of fellow college students.
  • Challenge yourself and gain professional and leadership skills in a position similar to a Resident Assistant (RA).
  • Housing, meal plan, and $1,550.00 stipend included.

Supplemental Instructors

(Upward Bound only)

  • Currently-enrolled college students (recent Bachelor's degree and/or higher preferred) with an interest in living in Flagstaff for the summer and helping high school students successfully complete a Coconino Community College course (ENG 090 or introductory Social Science course).
  • Supplemental Instructors (SIs) attend a summer session course with 5-10 students and hold a 2 hour tutorial lab with those students 4 days a week.
  • The total time commitment is approximately 20 hours a week.
  • Pay is $15.50/hr.

Desk Assistants

 

The Front Desk can be a flurry of activity at times and very quiet at other times. Desk Assistants must be able to keep a lot of information organized and act as the central hub of communication for all of the Summer Program staff, students and families. Desk Assistants must attend some of the training during the week just prior to the Summer Program. Desk Assistants may take classes or work other jobs during their employment.

Service Learning Leaders

(Upward Bound only)

  • Three Service Learning Leaders to work 10 hours a week during Academy.
  • The specific hours and days will be assigned by the Program Coordinator, but the Service Learning Leader will work 8 days for a total of 43 hours during the month.
  • Pay is $10.00/hour.
