2009 Summer Academy

May 30 - July 2

An Invitation

Join our program! The Academy offers Native American high students (current freshmen and sophomores) the opportunity to live and learn in a diverse and vibrant community. Nizhoni provides an environment that is academically challenging, yet filled with new experiences and opportunities for social, athletic, and recreational excitement. We hope you are inspired by what you find out about the Nizhoni Academy, and that you will join us for an enrichment opportunity at Northern Arizona University.

Academics

At the Academy, you will explore the breadth of Environmental Sustainability. The course of study asks the student to design an energy efficient and socially relevant community. The objective is to get students to understand that we cannot have sound economies, sustainable societies, and healthy people without a healthy planet. The objectives and goals are to:

  • Investigate the nature of architecture and community by exploring their own and others’ understanding of community;
  • Design, build, market and sell a sustainable energy efficient home/community;
  • Explore consumption and conservation;
  • Connect ecological and economic systems; and
  • Link social, economic, and environmental progress as shown through indicators such as the gross domestic product.

Cost to attend

Adequate funding enables us to offer the benefits of the Academy at no expense to the participants (other than a $25 registration fee and transportation to and from the program). Each participant will be provided with room and board.
