I am pleased that you have chosen to visit the Northern Arizona University diversity web site, designed as a clearinghouse of information about diversity-related curriculum, organizations, opportunities and events important to the NAU community.

NAU defines diversity as the whole of the human experience. The human experience is marked by its complexity, shaped by historical, social, economic and political phenomena, and is characterized by differences. I hope you will visit this site often and take advantage of the many opportunities to celebrate diversity at NAU.

We have received a number of recognitions that demonstrate our commitment to diversity and student success. In its 2010 annual report recognizing institutions that have conferred the largest number of degrees to minority students, Diverse Issues in Higher Education ranked Northern Arizona University fourth in the nation in producing Native American master's degrees, first in the nation for graduating Native Americans with master's degrees in education, eighth in the nation for graduating Latinos with bachelor's degrees in education, and 28th for master's degrees in all disciplines for Latinos. The report ranks doctoral degrees for the first time this year and NAU ranks 12th, 71st, and 89th for graduating Native Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans, respectively.

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities identified NAU as one of 11 publicly funded institutions nationwide that have proven effective in graduating Latino students.

The May 2, 2011 edition of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine ranked NAU 55th for undergraduate degrees earned by Latinos in this year's top 100 colleges in the nation for Latinos. The university ranks 8th in the nation for bachelor's degrees in education awarded to Latinos. NAU is also ranked 28th in the nation for master's degrees granted to Latinos. The rankings were derived from data gathered from the U.S. Department of Education's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System program.

Additionally, NAU's branch campus in Yuma, shared with Arizona Western College, is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
