Title IX Compliance, Sex Discrimination, Harassment and Assault

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects individuals from discrimination based on sex in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. While often thought of as a law that applies to athletic programs, it applies to many programs at NAU. Sex discrimination includes sexual harassment and sexual assault. Listed below are staff members who have primary responsibility for coordinating Title IX compliance.

The Title IX Coordinator has overall responsibility for Title IX compliance, including training, education, and administration of grievance procedures. The Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity handles complaints of discrimination and sexual harassment against any university employee or visitor. The office oversees the Safe Working and Learning Environment Policy (SWALE).

If you have a complaint against a NAU student-athlete, coach or staff member for sexual harassment, sex discrimination or sexual assault, you may contact one of the offices listed above or contact the SWA, who will facilitate the handling of the complaint with the appropriate office.
