Social Responsibility

Sustainability

Environmental Sustainability is part of our Corporate Responsibility program. It is a continual journey. Our primary mission remains: to improve the quality of daily life for people.  For information on NAU's sustainable effort please visit Green NAU.

FOOD DONATION - SUSTAINING THE COMMUNITY

We make regular donations to the Northern Arizona Food Bank.

HOOPER FUND

We support the Hooper Student Fund with an annual contribution. The Hooper Student Fund grants monetary awards of up to $2,500 for student projects that advance sustainability at NAU or in northern Arizona.

RECYCLE

We recycle all of the cardboard from product shipments. Additionally, we give every incoming freshman a re-usable water bottle to reduce the demand for individual bottled water, and we provide a fill station with reverse-osmosis filtered water for free to students, faculty, and staff.

REUSE

Our used cooking oil is converted to biodiesel and used to fuel buses on campus.

RECYCLED PRODUCTS

Our napkins are made from 100% recycled material.

ECO-FRIENDLY CHEMICALS

All of our chemicals used for washing dishes in resident dining are certified "green" products supplied by Ecolab.

BIODEGRADEABLE

We supply biodegradable "to-go" containers in Garden Toss.

WASTE REDUCTION

We have launched a food waste awareness campaign in our resident dining operations and are now a trayless operation, striving each day to reduce our waste.

COMPOSTING

In collaboration with the Office of Sustainability, we have developed a composting program at the DüB (South Dining) which focuses on pre-consumer food waste and creates quality soil additions for the SSLUG (Students for Sustainable Living and Urban Gardening) garden.

VENDORS

We work with vendors who implement environmentally friendly practices: Mission Linen, Shamrock Farms, Eco Lab, and Earthbound Farms, to name a few.

BUY LOCAL

We buy local produce as is available through our local supplier, Stern's Produce. Our milk comes from Shamrock farms, a Phoenix dairy.

ORGANIC OFFERINGS

The Campus Market & Oasis features a variety of organic, vegan, vegetarian, allergen-free and other healthy options. We serve organic spring mix and organic fresh spinach in our resident dining and salad operations.
