What is the America Reads Challenge?

The America Reads Challenge was initiated by President Clinton to "ensure that every American child (could) read well and independently by the end of the third grade." The America Reads Challenge calls on schools, families, and communities to get involved in helping children read well.

The America Reads program was implemented at NAU in the fall of 1997.  The College of Education (COE) took over the administration of the program in August of 2005. We are partnered with the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD), as well the Flagstaff Public Library, and the Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County.

The America Reads program fosters reading skills in elementary school students through one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, along with other associated activities. We provide meaningful academic, personal, and professional development experiences for the mentors/tutors involved.
